‘Do steelworkers need a hug? Damn right they do?’

Due to an overwhelming response from readers this past week, my Sunday column revisits the hot-button questions I initially asked in my Labor Day column:

*Are union steelworkers overpaid crybabies, or under-appreciated craftsmen?

*Are they asking for too much in their new contract with ArcelorMittal, or simply demanding a fair shake?

*Do they need a hug or a reality check?

*And, this last one from a local millworker: “Why does the local community hate us steelworkers so damn much?”

Almost one week later, I’m still getting feedback from that column - some in anger, some in tears, and all of it from passionate and opinionated residents in Northwest Indiana and beyond. I even heard from readers who live in steel-producing towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and who felt just as strongly about this issue as anyone in this region.

As promised in my Sunday column, I’ve posted below just about every reader response I received, from email, voice mail, and some face-to-face encounters. Feel free to join the conversation or add your two cents.
