Austeria is one of my favorite flicks! This is partly due to the outstanding performance by Jerzy Kawalerowicz. This outstanding performance is completely enhanced by the supporting talents of Franciszek Pieczka.
Set on the eastern fringes of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s internationally acclaimed film is a profound drama of courage and humanity based on his own memories of growing up in rural Poland. On the first day of World War I, a country inn in Galicia, Poland, becomes a refuge for an oddball mix of unfortunates hoping to escape the ensuing chaos of the invading army of Cossacks. The wise innkeeper watches as an exodus of local Hasidic Jews flee their homes. Believing he cannot escape his destiny, he refuses the help of his friends and stays to face the advancing soldiers.
