Crisis Intensifiers - From Mild To Radioactive - Why Crisis Sometimes Gets Out Of Hand

When crisis strikes, quick and effective response is needed to mitigate its effects. Done right, it can turn a potentially negative situation into positive outcome. There are, however, factors; which may intensify crises, make the impact worse, or even blunt the impact of the crisis response strategies. Such factors include the media’s interest in, and the public’s seemingly insatiable appetite for sensationalism.
For instance, while crisis can strike any size organization, studies indicate that the larger and respected an organization, the more sensational a crisis will be; hence such organization is subjected to more critical media scrutiny. Coupled with the media’s ability to share such information widely and instantaneously, a mere rumor or speculation can morph into a full blown crisis in no time at all potentially damaging reputation and undermining organizational legitimacy to exist.
Additionally, crisis intensifiers include: crisis history of the organization, relationship with stakeholders, severity of the damage, hesitation, retaliation, lying, pontification, confrontation, evasiveness and litigation. Each is discussed.
Crisis history of the organization. Some organizations are notorious for ignoring societal expectations such as labor, environmental and safety regulations. Some may survive relatively minor accidents and yet, at their peril, ignore its lessons. The investigation into the February 2003 Columbia shuttle accident suggested this assertion. NASA’s attitude toward safety was said to improve little even after the 1986 Challenger disaster (AP, 2003).
Relationship with stakeholders. An entity’s relationship with its stakeholders impacts how deeply a crisis is viewed. It also impacts stakeholders’ willingness to be persuaded regardless of response strategies employed. A mutual trusting relationship between the entity and its stakeholders can create goodwill from which to draw in times of crisis. The Ford Explorer and Firestone tire debacle, described above, provides an example. In a crisis, neither company would be afforded the benefit of doubt nor forgiveness as neither was especially endeared to the stakeholders as a result of their public spat.
Severity of the damage. A crisis resulting in loss of lives; or in extensive loses of income and life savings, takes on greater significance than say, one with loss of minor profits only. The just concluded Enron case provides the example. With the Enron collapse, nothing associated with the company was spared. In addition to loss to property and loss of lifetime income investments for the stakeholders, those involved were convicted and sent to prison for a long time.
Hesitation. In responding to the crisis, there must not be hesitation as it only makes the organization or spokesperson appears indecisive, incompetent or, worse, callous. In communication, perception is usually reality. When Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend on a weekend hunting trip on February 11, 2006, it was four days when he finally spoke publicly about it to the media. As a result of his hesitation to respond publicly about it, what was a simple accident on a weekend hunting trip with friends had morphed into a crisis. The media and the public had begun to attribute it to the White House’s reputation for secrecy and high-handedness (Lockheed, 2006).
Retaliation. When one is accused in a crisis or conflict situation, he is embarrassed, belittled, in other words, his face is threatened. A face is a metaphor for someone’s or an organization’s image and reputation. There are two types of faces: Positive face, the desire for others to appreciate, understand and approve the face or image presented; whereas, negative face is the desire for others not to embarrass or impose on them. According to Ting-Toomey (1994), facework or face negotiation theory refers to specific verbal and nonverbal messages that help to maintain and restore face loss, and to uphold and honor face gain. Depending on culture, one way is ex-girlfriend revenge in which case the accused attempts to make an accuser share his pain as a result of an accusation.
Lying. Another form of face managing tactic, lying implies deliberately misleading the audience about the cause of the incident or, on what would be done to mitigate the effect of the crisis on the stakeholders.
Pontification. Along the line of lying, above, is pontification, boasting or embellishment. Instead of meekness or contriteness, this represents an idea of sounding more than one really is or needs to appear in the event of a crisis situation.
Confrontation. Irritants abound everywhere amid a crisis situation. From the media seeking information, to family members inquiring about their loved ones, to stakeholders who just want assurance their investments are safe or their jobs would be there the next day, it can be overwhelming for an unprepared spokesperson. No matter how overwhelmed, the image of a spokesperson at the podium wagging his finger in a confrontational mode at the media can send the wrong message, keeping the issue alive, instead of making it quickly go away.
Evasiveness. This means not being forthcoming with information, or trying to make things confusing. When a crisis happens, there are information voids the media want filled, and dissonance, a feeling of discomfort the stakeholders want reduced or eliminated altogether.
Litigation. Like confrontation, above, litigation or court involvement only keeps the issue alive, brings more attention to the issue and, by extension, the organization, and shine bad light on the organization longer than necessary.

Traders without a plan are my favorite type of traders because they will always lose. Without a plan, how would one know when to take a trade and when not to? Having a trading plan is a necessity. I can not trade if I do not have a plan for the day. I feel lost without one.

Over 100 years ago a pioneer in stopmotion animation, (1892-1965), started making the first short movies with stopmotion animation after his experiments with documentaries on insects. One of his first movies the 1912 Khanzhonkov Company Moscow , produced “The Cameraman’s ex-girlfriend revenge” featured beetles and “infidelity” of all things!Ladyslaw Starewicz
Originally Starewicz would use wire legs to attach to the insects’ bodies. Later he would use quiet intricate ball & socket armatures ( well before his time ) combined with leather and felt-covered puppets in place of the delicate “dried” insect carcasses. He further extended his characters to frogs and human like figures in “A series of Animated Figures executed by the Russian Art Society of Paris” in 1922. While these animations had no live action intermingled in them they set the stage for Stop motion animation movies to come.
In 1925 Willis O’Brien (1886-1952) wowed audiences with his effects work on a film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World.
A precursor to this were some of O Brien’s earlier stop motion animation works; notably “The Dinosaur and the Missing Link: A Prehistoric Tragedy” in 1915. . O Brien used clay animation characters in this movie.
Soon after he began work on a similar movie about people stranded on a deserted island full of dinosaurs. This feature was originally called “CREATION”. Unfortunately, studio executives lost interest and dropped the project early on in production. They however did employ O’ Brien and his special effects skills on a movie originally entitled “THE EIGHTH WONDER.” The film was released in April 1933 under the title “KING KONG” a true classic for film history. This was undoubtedly one of the first mainstream successful movies to incorporate live action and stop motion animation. “Son of Kong” followed in December 1933 to equal acclaim.
Edward Nassour (1911-1962) the animation supervisor for the 1951 movie “Lost Continent” followed on now well established genre of mixing live action and stopmotion animation again with the theme of dinosaurs and monsters. Though the film was not as well received as previous such movies it did however keep the genre alive. “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”
In 1953 he famous animator animated the enduring monster from “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”. This movie can be described as one of the original landmark Harryhausen film..with its theme of the atomic age monster movies. It spawned a whole eara of “certain Japanese monsters” created by atomic experiments in early days of the Atomic bomb.
Ray Harryhausen.
1970 saw the release of a movie based on a book by JG Ballard called “When Dinosaurs ruled the Earth”. Master animator Jim Danforth created some memorable images in this movie and also later with Ray Harryhausen in “The Clash of the Titans” in 1981. The tradition of mixing stop motion animation with live action continued in the 80’s with the sci-fi thriller “Dreamscape” (1984). A large snake man creature keeps chasing the lead character in his nightmares using puppetry but also stop motion animation. Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) employs stop motion in one pivotal scene to great effect.
However as the millennium came and went the genre of mixing live action and stop motion animation in major film releases gave way to CGI. There are still however many examples of live action and stop motion animation used in short movies, documentaries and commercials such as the Sony Bravia Commercial with animated bunnies running throughout New York. Or the Sony PSP commercial which featured objects in animation and live action rather than character or puppet animation. Its notable also that the preferred medium seems now to move towards object animation rather than the more time consuming character animation of what is now the last century.

“Six Geese A-Slaying” is Donna Andrews’ tenth book in the Meg Langslow series. This time Meg has been talked into being Caerphilly County’s ‘Mistress of the Revels’ or in other words the person responsible for organizing the Christmas, excuse me, Holiday Parade. Ordinarily Meg would never have accepted the job but since the person who asked her to do it is the chairman of the committee that will decide whether or not her professor husband gets tenure, saying yes seemed like a good idea.
As she stands in her front yard, clip board in hand, directing the arriving floats, bands, animals and handlers and other assorted participants to their staging areas her two biggest worries are the approaching snow storm and getting the Twelve Days of Christmas tableaus lined up in the right order. That is until her nephew, Eric, hands her an even bigger problem. It seems that someone has killed Santa.
As with all the books in this series, “Six Geese A-Slaying” will keep you snickering, giggling and laughing out loud from beginning to end. You may or may not figure out early on who the killer is, but that doesn’t matter. The fun of these books has always been watching Meg deal with the chaos around her while trying to catch the killer. On a scale of 1 to 10 this book is definitely a 8.
