Parachutes es el primer disco de Coldplay, se sacó a a venta el 10 de julio de 2000 en el Reino Unido y el 7 de noviembre en los Estados Unidos. Se grabó en los Parr Street Studios de Liverpool.
Debutó como número 1 en el Reino Unido. Consiguió mantenerse en los Top 10 durante 33 semans. Junto al album sealieron cuatro singles: “Shiver”, “Yellow”, “Trouble” y “Don’t Panic”.

Parachutes fue a veces acusado de parecerse a los discos The Bends y OK Computer, ambos de Radiohead. Para Navidad, solamente en el Reino Unido vendieron 1.6 millones de copias. Parachutes fue nominado para el Mercury Music Prize en septiembre de 2000. Este disco ocupa el número 14 en los mejores 100 de todos los tiempos de Channel 4. En 2006 consiguió colocarse en el número 33 en los mejores 100 álbumes británicos de NME.
