A Happy Guinea Pig
I don’t like purchasing things without a review, but after purchasing several shampoos that failed to calm my irritated scalp, I decided to ignore that and the result was excellent. So now that there is a review, if you approach purchasing in the same way, maybe I can save you a few missteps.
However, if you’ve never used a shampoo with Piroctone Olamine (a dandruff fighting ingredient like Pyrithione Zinc or Salicylic Acid, but PO isn’t used in the states), I recommend you try the Body Shops Ginger Root Shampoo, as it’s less expensive. That shampoo treated me well for around 8 months and than my scalp developed a tolerance to that formulation.
As far as the L’Occitane shampoo, after my first use I knew it was going to work fine as my scalp felt like nothing, which is exactly what I want. There was no itch or irritation (unlike my experience with Nizoral 1% and 2%) and the shampoo did not leave my hair looking thin and dry. The only downside was the smell of pepper (as there is pepper oil in it), but I’ve become ignorant of that after several days.
The upside in choosing the L’Occitane over the Body Shop’s version is that the L’Occitane has Tea Tree Oil, which also helps with a problematic scalp, but again, you will very likely be just great with the less expensive shampoo (and if you’re patient, sometimes the Bodyshop’s website has free shipping).
Regardless, L’Occitane Anti-Dandruff Shampoo has proven over the past week + to be a fantastic shampoo for my irritated scalp, and after wasting money on a Biotin Shampoo, 2 Tea Tree Oil shampoos, a CE Bigelow Citrus Shampoo, and Revita, I’m glad I’m done searching, at least for a little while.
EDIT- My scalp has recently rejected all Piroctone Olamine shampoos (doesnt help with irritation any more). I think its more of a commentary on my scalp being ridiculous (Pyrithione Zinc used to work well and then it stopped) than on this shampoo, but it’s worth noting I’ve since had to move on to other shampoos.
Good dandruff shampoo (has nice smell)
This shampoo is more expensive than normal shampoo but definitely worth the price if you have a scalp prone to dandruff and oil. I have tried many different types of shampoos and have rotated them on a regular basis. I did this because I was experimenting with different products. I have everything from drugstore products like finesse to high end spa treatments whose french names I cannot spell. They have had varying measures of success on my hair. This however is one of the best and I’m saving it as a favorite. Basically, if you have an overactive glands on your head, this is your wonder drug! Just a bit and some thorough washing is enough to get rid of that gucky mess. Your scalp should stay clear for days before needing washing again. It has a nice cade smell (woody smell) which is unlike the scent of most shampoos. Plus, its classier looking alternative to Head and Shoulders.
Works great, but smells bad
I sought out a more natural way to battle my flaky scalp. I didn’t like the harsh chemicals more traditional dandruff shampoos used, plus they didn’t seem to work. This was really effective and I was surprised at how well it works. I used it daily for two weeks (until the flakes disappeared) and now use it twice a week for maintenance. It’s amazing, but when I dry my hair - it smells like wet dog. It fades once my hair is dry, so I won’t stop using it.
