Customer Reviews:

Horrible quality and inept service1
NICE CONCEPT, BUT I WOULD THINK TWICE ABOUT BUYING HAIER.

This is a nice compact wine cooler. The top shelf will go down to 43 degrees (if it is working) for 10 bottles of white and the bottom shelf will go down to 56 degrees for 25 bottles of red. It is a small size that can fit into a corner. It is a good height, being about the height of countertop. You can take shelves out so you can store magnums.

The unit has adjustable feet for leveling, but there is not adjustment available. It is easy to unscrew a foot all of the way out, and then it is difficult to screw back in. I ended up putting a coaster under one of the feet to level the unit.

BUT IT IS VERY POOR QUALITY.

When I got the unit home, I found it had a broken door and would not seal. The manual says, don’t return the unit, but call for service.

Haier contracts out the service to the same company that does home service calls for Sears. I called and someone came within a week. They found that the door was broken and needed to be replaced.

A new door was ordered from Haier. It took about 3 months for a door to come. Haier sent 2 doors, because both doors were badly chipped. I guess they felt we would just choose the one that was the best. Then Haier sent out 3 more doors, each one worse than the next.

I was getting nowhere with Haier, so I sent an email to the company headquarters in China. I finally got some action, and Haier said they would replace my entire unit.

I did get a “new” unit. It was kind of dinged up, but the door sealed.
Also, some of the shelves do not stay in place.

After about 30 days of running, the unit will start making a lot of noise. There is actually a thing in the owners manual about this. It says if the cooler starts making noise, unplug it for a little while. Of course, this is a bid pain, if you have the cooler up against the wall and the plug is not easy to access. It means about once a month, you need to empty the wine cooler, move it out from the wall, unplug, wait and push it back.

After 5 months, this new unit stopped cooling on the top shelf. I called Haier and they said it is no longer under warranty, since I purchased the unit over a year ago. But, the first unit was bad for 7 months and not really usuable. I’ve only had a “working” unit for 5 months.

I am now going to appeal to corporated headquarters and see if they will do something about it.

Does everything it says it will4
I bought this dual-temp wine fridge about 2 months ago, and so far everything has been great. It came assembled for about $60 shipping, set up in a minute, and has been quietly keeping my white and red cool since.

The unit is pretty large - make sure to check the dimensions. It’s attractive in black with a silver bezel around the glass door. The two LED temp displays are bright blue - almost bright enough to be a night light.

Setting the temperatures is pretty easy. It works like setting your average bedside alarm clock. I chose to have the top (smaller) portion at 46 for white and the lower (larger) portion at 62 for red. I haven’t tried putting my own thermometer in to test the temp, but the digits rarely deviate from what I set them at, even during the 80+ degree days at the end of the summer.

In terms of noise, it’s relatively inconspicuous. When the compressor turns on, there is a hum but it’s not enough to bother me at all in my mid-size living room, even while working or watching a movie. This was one of my concerns to begin with and this product makes the grade. Silent would be better, but I’m very content.

I haven’t had it long enough to test more than a few wines that have been stored in the fridge, and that’ll be the real test. We’ll gave to wait and see, but expect the results will be favorable. Overall, I’m quite satisfied.

BUYER BEWARE1
This product is terrible. It was given to me as engagement gift by my parents and after one month it stopped cooling in the top chamber. After getting a replacement unit - the new unit is now also no working. My dad also had problems with his. We have gone through 4 of these things. Haier should be ashamed selling defective products like this. I will never buy another Haier product ever again…

“MaxTemp” Hot Handle Mitt is made of heavy-duty Pyrotex, which resists scorching and burning to 450 degrees. Ideal as an all purpose handle mitt where safety is important. Also suitable for using outdoors when cooking on the BBQ. The Max Temp features heavy cotton batting and a steam barrier for ultimate heat protection. The thick terry lining protects from heat without sticking to the handle. It comes single-packed, not a pair.

  • Color: Black
  • Brand: Lodge
  • Model: HHMT
  • Released on: 2004-03-01
  • Dimensions: .0″ h x .0″ w x .0″ l,

Features

  • Durable handle mitt protects hands from hot handles
  • Heavy-duty Pyrotex fabric exterior with heavy cotton batting
  • Thick terry lining feels comfortable against the skin
  • Scorch-proof coating protects against steam burns
  • Resists temperatures up to 450 degrees F; comes in basic black

Scorched after very few uses3
This mitt is good at insulating handles from heat… one can hold the skillet comfortably without feeling the heat. I don’t think this thing can resist as high temperatures as stated on the product description because mine has already scorched at the edge where it comes in contact with the pan and as a result the fabric is fraying badly. I have never left the mitt in place while cooking, I have only used it to move the pan from the stove to the sink or to lift the pan to serve meals from it so I guess that the black fabric covering the outside of the mitt is not very heat-resistant.

Pretty darn good, still have to be a little careful4
I got this and the Lodge 2 Piece Hot Handle Holder Set at the same time, and this product is a lot better. It’s more substantial, thicker, and because it’s thicker (although the same size) it fits the handle more snugly, therefore less slipping around.

It does tend to get warm if you leave the holder on the handle while cooking. I don’t think that it will ever get hot enough to burn you, though. You should, at worst, feel a little discomfort, and you can just let go before it gets anywhere close to the burning point. I like to leave it on the iron skillets because it’s so easy to just grip the iron handle without thinking about it. I didn’t notice any searing of the material of this Mitt.

The problem is that if the holder gets wet, it becomes useless as a heat-resister. It doesn’t happen often, but all it takes is a drop of water to burn you.

I would recommend the silicone based holders, like HotHandle™ Silicone Cookware Handle Holder that I also got at the same time that I got the Lodge mitt. And no, I’m not a sales rep for them. Even if they get wet, the water doesn’t penetrate through the mitt, so you’re safe. Actually, I wouldn’t recommend this one - It’s sold by Target, not Amazon, and it’s a little bit too long for most Lodge handles.

Great idea!!!5
I really didn’t know what to expect when I bought this product, but when I got it I liked it a lot. I can see where it might burn if left pushed all the way on the handle, but I just simply slide it back towards the end of the handle, leave it there, and when I need to move or lift the pan, just slide it back down all the way on. It works like a good quality pot holder, and is a bit non-skid so it tends to grip pretty good. It fits in the hand well, and works as designed. Convenient to use with cast iron since the heat travels up the handles well, and you always need a pot holder or rag to keep from burning your hands. This is a well made product that works as intended. I’m glad I bought it.

Customer Reviews:

Fantastic!4
When my food processor quit working, I replaced it with a set of Microplane graters (the 35000 series). At the time I placed my order, I didn’t know about Microplane’s professional graters (the 38000 series). However, after using them, I was so impressed that I sent the 35000 series to my daughter and ordered the professional 38000 series for myself.

I do a lot of cooking, so I know these graters are going to get a lot of use. I’m in no mood to buy another food processor, as I rarely used the one I had and food processors take up a lot of valuable kitchen storage space. The Microplane graters, on the other hand, fit neatly inside a drawer and have protective covers on them.

I’m giving the 35000 series graters a 4-star rating only because they don’t look like they’ll last as long as the professional 38000 series graters. They are, however, very sharp and do an extremely effective job. I especially appreciate the sliding hand guard. I very seriously doubt I’d use a tool as sharp as this without something to protect my hands.

Upgrade to Professional Version2
These Microplane graters are wonderful, but I recommend the Professional versions instead. If you use your graters a lot, the plastic edges will eventually break, so spend the extra few dollars and get the steel edged Professional versions to start with. I just replaced two graters myself because they broke.

Don’t buy this one.2
I like Microplane graters generally, but the plastic frame on the home series is not up to the job. On my grater, the frame cracked then broke after just a few uses. I think they should get rid of this one and stick with the professional graters with steel frames. I expected more. I emailed a complaint to them, but didn’t get a response.

Metal … it says METAL people5
You all bought the cheaper version of the product and are ripping on the metal version. I have these lights in my yard and they have worked for 4 yaers without fail… my ONLY complaint is that the caps occasionally blow off…. other than that, I love them, they have worked flawlessly, still look new and light, without fail, every evening!!!

Junk, at any price…1
I have over 2 dozen installed just under 2 years. More than half are suffering some kind of failure. Most have the plastic stake broken. Some have the middle plastic “joint” sheared. Several more have the third “tier” broken off. Several more have electrical connector failures.

The stake failure was so bad, I actually bought replacement stakes (6 for $9!) direct from Intermatic. Their current exploded parts drawing had a different ID, than the one supplied WITH THE ACTUAL PRODUCT. We had to work our way through that issue as well. The charged me, refusing to accept that the plastic is too brittle, thus under warranty. As I re-installed 2 of the 6 replacement stakes, they too sheared off! Brand new parts that failed.

I purchased these to replace the ultra cheap plastic Toro lights I had. They lasted over 15 years, and the only thing that ever failed was the clear plastic lenses over the bulbs. They degraded from ozone/UV and cracked/shattered. I should have simply bought new lenses from Toro.

All that I currently own (I have already thrown at least 3 away)are going back to Home Depot for full credit. Avoid the pain of a return! Incidentally, I live in far Eastern LA, so this isn’t a case of hard soil or even harder winters… They are simply JUNK! If I could, I would have given a ZERO STAR rating…

Low quality lights1
The lights are of very low quality, breaks easily, wind rips the cap off and rings just falls off after some time.
Not recommended.

Krups FBC2 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven, Black Description:

Krups high-speed quartz heating system takes masterful control of heat in the chamber. Each set of quartz heating element, both top and bottom, is alternately powered at the full 1600 watts to maximize the effect of radiant heat. The heat distribution is aided by a special reflective crumb tray that directs this important form of heat to all corners for excellent results. Convection heat, important for longer baking times, circulates heated air around the food for the best result in the fastest time. The defrost function uses the convection fan only and gently and evenly defrosts food without producing hot spots. This 6-slice toaster oven has temperature controls in 25 degree increments from 150-450 degrees, a digital timer from 1 minute to 90 minutes and an auto shut off after elapsed time. For toasting, it has 9 levels or browning with a countdown timer. Illuminated LCD control panel with easy to use controls and high quality soft touch buttons, it has a digital clock that displays when the cooking functions are not in use. The non-stick interior surface is durable and easy to clean. This unit includes a non-stick bake pan, broiling tray and thermal resistant tongs for safe removal of hot pans or food and comes with a 1-year warranty.

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #3702 in Kitchen & Housewares

  • Brand: Krups
  • Model: FBC213
  • Dimensions: 22.05 pounds

Features

  • Toaster oven with patented quartz convection technology for even heating

Customer Reviews:

Didn’t think I’d like it this much!5
I finally had to replace a Delonghi that I used for 13 years. That is a pretty good run for a small appliance these days. Plus, I used it a lot. So I naturally set out to get another DeLonghi to replace it (presumably for another 13 years).

What I discovered was that toaster ovens have become much more advanced and perhaps more complex as well. I usually embrace technology in all other aspects of my life but I really liked the simplicity of 3 knobs to turn. Idiot proof. I didn’t relish the idea of having to punch a bunch of buttons to reheat a casserole or even make toast.

However I did a little research and decided to get a convection type oven. I narrowed it down to 2 or 3 and chose this one based on some key factors:

1. The crumb tray must be removed from the FRONT. Rear removal is a deal breaker.

2. The LCD should light up. This one does, but many don’t.

3. The oven should shut itself off after cooking time is done, just like a microwave. I multi-task in the kitchen so setting separate egg timers for separate dishes gets to be a nuisance. Plus it is safer.

Okay, one real choice — the Krups.

Now the bonuses:

1. Fast foods like fries, fish sticks, chicken tenders come out evenly cooked and very crisp.

2. There is no interior light (I didn’t need one) but the heating elements are so bright that you can pretty much see everything when one is activated.

3. The controls are very easy to use. A quick read of the manual and I owned the controls.

4. Food is invariably cooked in less time with better results. This may be seen as a negative initially because you need to guesstimate cooking times. I find that with foods/recipies that provide a range (i.e., 15-18 mins.), just go with the lower value and it comes out pretty near perfect.

5. The price is very competitive and well-worth it in my opinion. I even paid more for mine at the time of purchase (price has gone down since).

In conclusion, I am very pleased. But I guess that is clear by now.

P.S. The instructions say to run the oven empty for 15 mins before using it. Do this. Mine emitted a smell when first running empty (residue from manufacturing I suppose). As a precaution, I did it a second time and no smell.

Excellent design5
I previously owned the Cuisinart Toaster-Oven that is the top seller here, and it worked well enough for a couple of years, but did not cook evenly and did not have a timed shutoff. It was annoying to always have to carefully remember when to turn off the oven.

Finally the Cuisinart died due to a power surge (the only outlet I had forgotten to protect), and so I decided to purchase this Krups unit from Amazon.

After just a couple of weeks of use, I cannot speak to its reliability, but it performance has been excellent. The elements that turn on and off, do help to heat the food more evenly than other toaster-ovens. The controls are simple and easy to understand, and thus quicker to use even for tech-savvy users.

The unit is also solidly constructed and designed. For example, other toaster-ovens have places that are hard to clean, and crumb trays that have to be removed from the back or bottom (which requires you to pick up and move the unit). The Krups oven instead allows the crumb tray to be removed from the front, and in fact uses the crumb tray to focus the heat (don’t lose it!).

The best part of the Krups toaster-oven is the simple feature that the timer turns off the oven. The Cuisinart has a timer - but it only beeps. The Krups turns off the oven, and thus I don’t have to worry if I am distracted by something like the doorbell right when I otherwise need to go turn off the oven, to prevent the food from being burned.

Again, I don’t know about this unit’s reliability (small appliances are notorious for breaking down right after the warranty expires), but in terms of performance and design, it’s top notch.

A little scrapper that knocks out the competition5
I decided to replace my Black & Decker toaster oven not because it broke down, but because I was so irritated with the hit-or-miss way it had worked since I took it out of the box. This seemed to be a trend with most of the toaster ovens I’ve owned, which now total 5 including the Krups.

The first thing you’ll notice about this oven is how heavy it is. The enclosure has a nice black powder coat finish that is easy to take care of, and it’s well-vented, which is reassuring. While the top, sides, and bottom are all insulated (which is to say, the inside wall of the oven is not also the outside wall), the back is only a thin piece of metal, so be sure that it doesn’t butt up against anything that isn’t heat-resistant… the temperature of the inside of the oven will be the temperature of the back of the oven.

The controls are indeed very intuitive and extremely easy to use. The temperature and the timer are both selected independently, as is the mode of operation (kudos to Krups for using individual buttons for each mode, instead of a common button to toggle the mode from Conv. Bake, Toast, Defrost, etc.). The display is LCD, and is backlit by very nice, bright white LED’s. Likewise, each mode button has its own red LED, and the start/stop button is ringed by a number of bright-true-green LED’s. Overall, the layout and user experience is really stellar.

Baking, along with every other function, is a breeze, and is quite consistent. Most items take around the same amount or slightly less time than is recommended. The Convection Bake function is outstanding, and when I re-heated a few pieces of fried chicken using it, they came out crispy, tender, and still as juicy as they were when they were fresh. I was amazed.

I was also surprised to find that the door is not switched, which is to say the heating elements and fan do not shut off when the oven door is opened. I find this to be a relief, as the Black & Decker I previously owned lost a lot of thermal ground when the door was opened (which it then had to re-gain by blasting whatever I was baking as it re-heated the oven chamber), and most digital ovens (including my old B&D) have a sickening “beep” whenever you open the door. In case you blacked out. Or were sleepwalking. The Krups has no such beep, which might prove to be a shock if you have a habit of baking cookies while sleepwalking. The rest of your family will thank you, however.

Casseroles come out done perfectly, meats are juicy and tender (try one of those pre-marinated pork roasts… fantastic!), baked goods are crispy. After working all day in a commercial kitchen where our convection ovens are always touch-and-go, I love coming home and cooking with this little monster, and knowing that the results will be picture-perfect.

So, to break it down…

Pros:
Clean, pleasing industrial design
Useful, simple controls
Excellent baking results
Powerful heating elements and convection fan

Cons:
Enclosure gets pretty hot
Fan can cause some vibrations as oven heats and expands
No non-timed baking mode

I recently built an EASY UP to store my lawn tractor behind my garage. The directions were simple to follow and I liked not having to cut any angles. Project was completed in less than two hours. Used treated lumber and coated wood screws. Covered the entire structure with a used billboard cover made of poly coated canvas - plain white side out - purchased for $20.00 I think this thing will last for years.

I rated it four stars because I think they could have made the hardware a little stronger.

2×4basics Enclosure Kit5
Very easy to install over my 2×4 basics frame. It took me about a half a day to put the whole frame together and to get the cover over the frame. I didn’t have a very level place to build the frame and would suggest building it on an area already leveled. Two of us were able to move the whole thing into it’s permanent spot after I built it. I am going to use the structure to keep some of my plants in over the winter and to start some plants early next spring. We have had two wind storms blow thru the Seattle area and the enclosure held up well. My fence needs some more reenforcement but the enclosure stood up to the weather. I like that there are zippered doors with tie backs on both ends of the enclosure.

FEB 2010 UPDATE: Added a set of shelves and just bought four heated pads to keep the seed beds warm at night. The vegetable seeds should start popping up the first part of March. This was a great purchase, I am still very pleased with the system. The potted plants that I stored in the cold frame over winter faired really well and I didn’t have to try to store them in the garage like I use to do.

Good for light use3
I bought this kit to put together in my basement to provide an enclosure for my growing orchid collection. It was easy for me to put up by myself, if a little awkward in places. I did not buy the custom cover, but used several rolls of window insulation plastic (which came out almost as expensive anyway!).

I did have an issue with some screw holes not being present in a few of the plastic parts as indicated in the plans, but these were parts that hold together just fine under their own weight. I did not use any side bracing that is optional with the plans as it is in a basement. However if you wanted this to be outside, you’d definitely need the extra bracing to ensure it stayed standing under winds.

Beware of accuracy and Oregon Scinetific policy about accuracy2
I bought this unit to replace another unit from another vendor. The problem I had with my other unit was poor range of the wireless sender. I also wanted a temperature alarm because I will be using this in an RV and want to make sure my water compartment does not freeze.

The base is small and compact and the LCD is perhaps a little crowded but not terrible I would say. I do like the size.

My disappointments with this unit and remote are twofold.

I ran into a problem with accuracy on the remote… the temperature reported was 3 to 4 degrees off from the base unit temperature when they were sitting side by side. This was in comparison to the units I was replacing as well some other non wireless thermometers I used for comparison.

I proceeded to the Oregon Scientific web site and requested support on this issue online. Their site says you should get a response within 4 days. After 8 days, I had not received a response so I called the company and explained my issue. The following is what they told me.

After telling me who their products are not intended as scientifically calibrated instruments (I sensed they have heard this complaints before), they indicated that their policy is that a thermometer (or remote sender) can be plus or minus 2.5 degrees off from another unit. This is not 2.5 plus or minus from the real temperature but from the any other sender or base unit. I indicated that this could mean that a unit could be off 5 or 10 degrees from the real temperature and they answered that my interpretation was correct and that this is their policy. I did not accept the explanation from the first support agent so she handed me off to another support agent who reiterated the policy. Two different support people from Oregon Scientific had now told me the same thing.

I was not expecting perfection, but I guess since this unit is priced a little more than average that at least it would be somewhat accurate… maybe one to two degrees off at most. A I mentioned at least three other thermometers that I used to compare the results from this one were within about 1 degree of each other. The base unit on this one was close but the remote was significantly off.

To me it seems that Oregon Scientific’s policy on accuracy is absurd.

One question I asked the support person is why didn’t Oregon Scientific articulate this policy on the packaging so that a consumer could make a reasonable and informed choice based on that information… of course there was no answer.

I think that if the consumer knew how inaccurate a thermometer Oregon Scientific’s policy allows their products to be, this knowledge would be detrimental to their sales. After all, isn’t accuracy what a digital thermometer is all about? I know that had I known all this, I would not have bought this product.

I guess my reaction is that I had an incorrect perception of Oregon Scientific products being step up products…. Something a little better. Certainly their customer service response, their policies and the product itself suggests otherwise.

Woiks like a champ!5
I had to replace an indoor/outdoor thermometer as the old one freezes up when it — ahem — freezes OUT. Oregon makes good stuff and this device is up to snuff. Batteries in the outdoor unit may require changing during long durations of frigid weather. But then, so don’t we?

Don’t waste your money!!1
I ordered this because it had all the features I needed at the right price. I received the merchandise quickly and installed the batteries. The main unit picked up the sensor just fine - UNTIL - if you set the clock or date, the signal is lost!! I repeated this experiment 3 times - at distances of 1″, 10″, and 10′ - EVERY time the unit lost the sensors signal. The seller took care of me, but I do NOT recommend this product to anyone unless you like to buy Junk.
