Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung4
Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung

Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 is part of a 5 volume series by William Cheung. The series is available on VHS or DVD. I strongly recommend that you buy the DVD version. DVD’s can be played on a home DVD player attached to the TV, a small, portable DVD player which can almost fit in your pocket, if you wear pants with large pockets like those military style dungaree pants some police and paramedics are wearing now days, or you can play DVD’s on a laptop or note book computer that has an installed DVD/cd player. This would enable you to take your DVD lessons with you where ever you go and to view them whenever you have time. You can watch DVD’s in Slow Motion or speeded up. You can freeze a scene to examine it as a still picture. You can capture images. DVD’s have an interactive potential for the viewer which the VHS machines lack. This characteristic supports the viewers learning requirements for understanding a subtle or difficult move or concept being studied.

Wing Chun is the style of Kung Fu Bruce Lee learned before he developed his own style of Jeet Kune Do. Although, Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do in an attempt to develop a simpler yet superior means of fighting, he remained influenced by Wing Chun and incorporated some of its concepts into Jeet Kune Do. You will see it for yourself If you watch this video series by William Cheung and compare it with Jeet Kune Do by reading his books and maybe watching some videos of Jeet Kune Do such as the video adaptation of Bruce Lee’s Fighting Method by Ted
Wong and Richard Bustillo.

Wing Chun is very unique from most traditional styles of Kung Fu or Karate. Simplicity is its main characteristic. There are only 3 stances which feel some what more natural than the many classical Kung Fu or Karate stances. Strikes and punches are thrown from the middle of the chest. The fist is given a flick of the wrist at the last instant upon contact with its target. I compare this to the flick of the wrist at the last instant as a base ball is pitched to add a little extra velocity to it. This manner of punching is very different from the traditional hand on hip and twist of the fist at the moment of contact found in classical Kung Fu and Karate.
Kicks are kept low, usually not higher than the opponent’s waist. There is no exageration of the move’s execution, such as the wide sweeps, large circles, and exagerated force used in classical blocks and strikes.

The strategy and attitude of a Wing Chun practitioner seems more similar to that of aikido and jujitsu practioners in that the practitioner of wing chun seeks to harmonize with his opponents force rather than to oppose it.

Volume 1 of Wing Chun begins a demonstration of the Sil Lim Tao form three times. Karate practitioners would think of it as a simple kata using only hand techniques.

Next, exercise drills of basic blocks are demonstrated. In contrast to classical Kung Fu and Karate where students are taught to block first, then counter with a strike or kick. Wing Chun practioners use both of their hands to block and strike or kick at the same time.

Demonstrations of Wing Chun basics are shown more than once from different angles.

William Cheung describes Wing Chun’s strategy as being four steps or phases of attacking an opponent’s balance, creating an opening in the opponent’s defense, controlling the opponent’s elbow and maneuvering the opponent into a position in which his arms become crossed and therefore unable to fight back when trapped in that position.

William Cheung demonstrates defenses against various punches, strikes and kicks. He and his assistant demonstrate combinations and the rolling punch technique.

Foot work is demonstrated by his assistant. This leads to demonstration of the Chum Kil form and its applications because Chum Kil incorporates foot work and kicks into the form.

William Cheung and his assistant end volume 1 of Wing Chun by demonstrating a means of Chi meditation.

I think this video series offers useful information and techniques to consider for every martial artist. If you appreciate intelligent systems of fighting, you will not be disappointed with this series. However, some people might have not much use for volume 4 which is about fighting with chinese butterfly knives and a long staff called a dragon pole.

Great Video4
I took Wing Jitsu for a year (This art was invented by my instructor) and always liked the wing chun side of it the best. I work late hours so I can not take a class so I have decided to get videos and work out with my fiends.

This video has some really good stuff. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is cause they don’t do a good job of covering the very basic concepts. That worked out for me cause I already knew them pretty much but if you have never take wing chun you may want to start with Wing Chun: The Science of In-Fighting. I know a lot of people say that you can not learn kung fu from a book or DVD but in the old days in China a lot of people learned from book as long as you have some one to practice with you should be able to learn from this DVD. I have already learned most of this DVD and can not wait to get the next one.

Superficial explanation1
I was more than surprised to see the poor quality of this DVD, especially after reading the positive reviews.
Very very superficial DVD, which seems more an exhibition than a didactical tape.
No explanation of the moves, just the two persons “dancing” around, performing moves at very high speed.
This is clearly not an “instruction” video, since the techniques are not explained, just performed.
I normally prefer books as a way to learn something, but I have found some very serious and valuable DVD as well. Not this one.
Maybe if you are an advanced Winch Chung practitioner, with years of practice with a real Sifu, this can be for you. Otherwise, you will not catch much from these video.

History rocked and rock made history
during a sold-out three-gig stand at
Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together
for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969. Whether they will ever team again is unknown. But with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live From Madison Square Garden, on this Blu Ray, fans everywhere are able to experience the sound and the glory of a performance on that famous stage by two of rock’s greatest artists.

the DVD is preferable to the CD, though the CD is quite good5
I bought the CD and the DVD versions of the Clapton/Winwood MSG as a combo from Amazon. The CD (which I reviewed in its listing) I gave four stars to - it’s very good, but now that I’ve seen the DVD, I’d give the DVD five stars, mainly for what it adds to the equation: the visuals. While it might seem counter-intuitive to grade musicians of this caliber by `what you can see’, the DVD added such a great dimension to the show, in terms of WATCHING them solo and seeing the interplay between them, and their excellent band (these guys have serious CHOPS), that I think the DVD ups the ante, hence I’m giving the DVD 5 stars. The musicianship is excellent (they make it look so EASY….i guess that’s what the best guys do when they’re on their game? Plus they’re clearly having a good time up there), and it’s great to be able to see who’s playing what (namely, that Winwood plays guitar on the first two cuts, and then on several others toward the end - he’s a very good guitarist, and holds his own with Clapton, sometimes trading solos. I wasn’t exactly sure what SW was playing on, just from listening to the CD - Chris Stainton is the other keysman). The picture is very good, and the camera work/composition is excellent, with nice close-ups and some striking angles where they got both guys in the same shot, Winwood on keys and Clapton on guitar. Some have pointed out editing inconsistencies w/ the visuals, but I didn’t really notice it, as I was enjoying the show so much. I listened to the sound in DTS-mode (as opposed to straight 2-channel stereo) and it was excellent - really good mix - much preferable to the CD mix. I guess if you couldn’t be there, this DVD (with a good A/V system) is about as close as you can get.

As for the extras on Disc 2, they’re good - interviews, some background on Clapton and Winwood’s 60’s exploits, their time together in Blind Faith, and behind-the-scenes prep for the MSG shows. There are also a couple of bonus cuts, which didn’t make the `main’ concert as presented on Disc 1 - I noticed in spots, there were synch problems (from watching the drummer) between audio and video, but the extra cuts are nonetheless good (including a 7 minute “Crossroads”). Overall, the disc set was definitely worth the dough, and if you’re a fan of either Clapton or Winwood, and have any inclination to buy this, then absolutely do so. You won’t be disappointed.

Some things are meant to be!5
Clapton And Winwood have just dropped a forty year Time Bomb on the Baby Boom Generation with this release. Soul Psychedelisizing, Electrifying, Riveting performances…Very Special! What a great Mix of tunes…Awesome tributes to many of the greats who have left us…Ray, Buddy and Jimi to name a few. WOW! Absolutely incredible Sound and Video…I was very lucky to have seen Blind Faith Live at the old Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan during the Summer of 69, when I was just a boy. You won’t want to miss this Dynamic Duos show if it comes to your Neighborhood In June. I have never seen Winwood and Clapton having so much fun! Great Stuff…Get it!

Live at Madison Square Garden - EC and SW4
First thing first, this is a fantastic dvd that is a must have for any musician -especially a guitar player. I saw one review that complained about too many guitar solos??? For me, that is the highlight of this amazing release. There are some extended jams that shows the true talent of these guys who really invented the jam band. Eric Clapton played some of the most inspired guitar in his entire career. It may have been the incredible sound of SW’s keys that provided the foundation for the inspired play. His playing on double trouble definitely made me pick up my strat… Steve Winwood still has an amazing voice along with great chops on the organ, but it was cool to see him jam on his guitar during Dear Mr. Fantasy. He is a great guitar player and I would have liked to see him play more of it along with EC on this dvd. BUT, when you have a guitar gun-slinger like Eric Clapton for a sideman, I can see why he let EC handle most of the guitar! Eric Clapton looked as if he really enjoyed playing during this performance. I have to think it was playing on songs that were fun to play for him. The highlights for me were them changes-glad-pearly queen-little wing-voodoo child-can’t find-dear mr fantasy. The only reason I give it a 4 star is that I am not sure you need another version of cocaine - and it added nothing to the show. And I think there could have been a few more extra songs on the 2nd dvd. But I have watched this dvd several times and actually enjoy it more than the Cream re-union dvd. Not sure why, because Cream is one of my favorite groups of all time. But that says a lot for this dvd. The camara gets in tight on EC’s guitar playing which is a dream for any guitar players. And it is not the usual fast cut style that we see too often in concert dvd’s. It is easy to watch and listen to. I have to get the cd now!

A Must-Buy digital camera!!!5
I love this camera. It worth every penny!
If you’re like me, you don’t want to spend more than $500( or even $300) to buy a close to perfect camera. But the quality should be good. Then this is it! Why? (1) You don’t see a lot camera below $200 come with flashlight, do you? (2) It’s 1.3M Pixels CCD. That means you can print 5×10 pictures. (3) PC Camera feature. (4) Compact size, easy to use.
Of courese, it has some room to improve: (1) It’s a battery-eating monster! Buy a lot of batteries or buy rechargebale batteries. (2) No optical zoom.(what do you expect for less $200?) (3) 8M smartcard is not enough. I’ve upgraded it to 64M from amazon.com for $29.(4) If it has built-in microphone would be convenient while using pc camera feature.
I suggest you can do some research and compare it with other cameras in this price range. It would surprise you.
(ps. if you want a little better quality, it has a sister product A201 which is about $60 more but 2.1M Pixels.)

Great digital camera - low price5
Very well designed, full feature, really small digital camera at a very low price. 1.3 megapixels great for computer display and good for regular sized printed photos. Has many many high end features. Uses cheap AA batteries (not long lived, however). Available ac converter. Requires USB (with windows 98, 2000 or ME) computer to download to PC. Exceptionally easy to use. Has close-up macro facility (can take photos of regular text on a page). Bottom line - a really well-designed digital camera

An INCREDIBLE bargain!4
This camera seems to have it all for a sub-200 model! Although I am not a novice digital photographer, I am not a professional — nor do I want to be. I wanted a camera that would take nice pictures of friends, family and the occasional scenery shot that could be printed out or uploaded. The Fujifilm 1.3 does this well, and prints very nice photos at photo size (I do 4×6, 5×7).

The selling points (besides the price) are as follows: 1) its very small — making it easy to take with you in a pocket, 2) it works on both my Mac OS X and Win 98/ME PC via USB — essentially plug-n-play, 3) it takes great daylight pictures, 4) it doesn’t eat batteries if you don’t use the display mode — ie: operating it like a normal camera using a viewfinder. I have not filled up the 8 MB card that came with the camera yet, although I haven’t tried very hard (maybe a max of 20 photos on fine resolution in a sitting). Because I download to a laptop, I don’t really need to spend additional money for a bigger card. I’ve also dropped it a few times, without affecting performance, so its a pretty sturdy little camera.

The only issue I have with the camera is that there is a learning curve for most of the features that may cause you to lose good photo opportunities at first. You have to read the manual to know how the display works, and how to set the camera for different sorts of lighting schemes. I blurred a few photos because I didn’t realize the macro switch had turned on while it was in my bag, and didn’t discover this until later when I downloaded them. I haven’t quite mastered the various flash settings and took a low-light, indoor shot from about 8 feet away that isn’t great. If I were to put some time in learning the display functions, rather that setting it on “auto” and using the viewfinder all the time, I might become quicker at changing the settings for different lighting situations. As it is now, the camera is fine for my uses, and I can usually brighten the “mistakes” in Photoshop.

en years after her ordeal in the jungles of the Amazon, Catherine narrates her grueling experience to a news reporter: At age 18, Catherine leaves her London prep school to be with her parents at their factory stationed in the Amazon Jungle. As the family enjoys a boat trip into the jungle, a tribe of headhunters ambushes them and her parents are killed. Catherine is then taken hostage by the tribe. Over the next few years, Catherine is forced to live by the tribe’s barbaric rituals and savagery while always remembering who she is, where she comes from, and remaining “civilized”. Until, that is, she finds out the truth concerning the murder of her parents.

Fine Cannibal Film5
I have almost all of the cannibal movies ever made and this is one of the most original. A girl takes a boat voyage with her parents, aunt and uncle. Her parents are killed with blowguns. A tribe of natives takes the girl captive and a warrior takes a particular liking to her, but it is said he killed her parents. There’s a twist ending that wraps it up, and shouldn’t be too surprising unless you forgot some big continiuity at the beginning. The girl is modestly hot and topless through most of it. This is a must-see for fans of cannibals. I guess this version by Shock-O-Rama is an official release, as it’s listed here on Amazon.com.

Hmmm?.1
This movie is basicly too lousy too be watched at all. The plot is boring and the gore and sex that might make one forget about that is badly made and occurs too rarely.
Yawn.

Lesser known jungle shocker3
“Amazonia” could easily share the reputation of the other 1980’s cannibal gut-munchers, but for some reason it’s not quite as well known. Which is a shame, as though it’s by no means a masterpiece, it’s not actually that bad. The plot involves a young girl (the titular Catherine Miles)who is stranded in the remote jungle after both her parents are killed and decapitated by a tribe of headhunters, who keep Catherine as a prisoner, and the majority of the film charts her fate in the hands of the tribe and her ultimate revenge on the death of her parents.

Now let me say first of all that “Amazonia” does try to deliver the blood and gore, but the presentation of most of the gruesome effects is done very poorly. The editing and camera angles for all the gore shots are awful, and it’s probably because the prosthetic heads and body parts are for the most part, pretty sub-standard. Which is a shame because most horror fans are going to be watching for just these things. Things kick off in very eye-popping (literally!) fashion with the opening murder of Catherine’s parents, but you’ll see what I mean if you watch the film, because the editing of the gore close-ups is so sloppy that it looks like the film has been cut. I don’t think it has, I think the director was just too scared to show the effects for longer than just fleetingly because they weren’t very good. Time and time again, Catherine is confronted by awful sights such as someone being attacked by a crocodile, or various savage punishments and rituals, but each time the “money shot” is botched and disappointing.

But on the other hand, other parts of the film are actually very well made. There are some gorgeous shots of the lush jungle paradise, and some scenes of Catherine being dwarfed by the stunning scenery are really nicely done. Of course the usual inserts of stock footage of didn’t fool me for one second, and yes we do get to see various wild animals eating each other, but I didn’t see any examples in this film where I think a situation was set up and animals were killed especially for the cameras , whcih makes a nice change for this genre.

What also surprised me is that I actually did get involved in the plot. No doubt influenced by the “recovered film” idea of “Cannibal Holocaust”, the story is told as an entire extended flashback, from a courtroom where Catherine is introduced at the very start of the film, actually standing trial for murder. Who she murders (and why) is only revealed towards the end of the story, but it doesn’t take much brainpower to predict the twist ending that is revealed.

All in all, I would class this film as pretty well made. The jungle location used is very impressive, and parts of the film must have used quite a considerable budget. They also shoot all the scenes of Catherine’s life in London in some nicely chosen parts of the city.

The acting isn’t too bad, the main actress playing Catherine does pretty well, and for a role that is 95% almost totally naked I’d say she comes through it with most of her dignity still intact. The rest of the roles feature the standard hammy Italian bit-players, and the whole cast is saddled with a rubbish English dubbing job as usual. What really annoyed me was the woeful appearance of the head-hunting tribespeople, there wasn’t one of them that looked anything like an authentic savage, and all of them were dolled up in the most painfully obvious black wigs, which looked doubly ridiculous on the men, especially the poor “hero” Umukai, who even dared go swimming in his mop and always returned from the water with something resembling an oilslick on his head.

At least I can’t say “Amazonia” is not entertaining. I enjoyed watching it and had the special effects been better it could have been up there with the Lenzi and Deodato jungle shockers. If you’ve never been brave enough to watch a film of this type before, this might be a good one to start with as it’s probably the least offensive out of the genre, and you can enjoy some chunky gore without that bad taste in your mouth afterwards…hey, maybe that’s a bit like the difference between headhunters and cannibals!

DECEMBER 2005: I have only had this item for about three weeks or so. I am hoping that it “holds up” over time, unlike a lot of other DVD players on the market that apparently fail so quickly they are practically disposable in nature.

The “pros” on this item (so far) are:

* sleek, slim, uncluttered look of the unit

* comes in either black or silver, so you can match it up to your other devices.

* easy set up. There’s a electrical plug, trip-RCA jacks and an S-video jack. Hook-up is a snap. Hardware-wise, the device, then, is really uncluttered.

* seems to be a good deal for the price.

The “cons” (so far) are:

* as said elsewhere by other reviewers… it IS slow. Slow to boot a disc. Slow to re-start a disc that has been stopped. Just slow.

* the display readout on the front of the box. It scrolls words like “welcome,” “open” “close” and “no text.” The firmware engineer was apparently out to lunch on this one. There’s not even a clock display. It will display the time the DVD has played, thank goodness.

*the on-screen menu is pretty lame. Must have been the same engineer. The menu choices are only displayed as cryptic graphics, and the choices for each graphic are brief and uninformative (as in “on, off, auto” or similar types of statements). You will absolutely have to work through the manual to figure it out. And you won’t find a lot of useful functionality after you do. It is a pretty bare-bones box.

* The remote control could use a good bit of improvement. The text is large enough to read … but the buttons barely protrude from the face. You have to grasp this thing firmly, get your finger right on the button and apply a good bit of pressure to score. And a lot of the buttons can’t be pushed while the thing is sitting on the coffee table … the back of the device is beveled at the top, so if you press on the buttons near the top — common usage buttons like TV on/off, box on/off and open/close — while it is sitting on a level surface, the thing just flips up in the air. And the range is horrid. It can’t handle getting its signal over the edge of my coffee table three feet away from the box. You’ve got to pick it up and aim it directly at the device if you want the box to respond. There’s no facilitation for using the remote at night (no glow in the dark, backlighting, light-through, etc.) AND the remote came in silver. Who at Sony thought that I would want a silver remote if I bought a black box? Was molding cases for the remote in two different colors too big a challenge for them … or did it just make it easier for Sony to manage its inventory?

* The box has already told me “no disc” incorrectly a couple of times. Jogging it opened and closed resolved the issue. Either the tray is not designed to align the disc 100% when inserted … or this is an indication the device is going to have read problems down the road. Time will tell.

Still, IF it is quality, IF it is durable, then it’s worth what I paid for it.

UPDATE: September, 2006. After owning one for almost a year … and buying two more this summer … I can still recommend this unit. Every once in a great while, it gets confused enough so that I have to unplug it from the wall to “reboot it.” It has tracked flawlessly on almost every DVD … just a freeze here and there on some heavily used Netflix rentals. I do not see any evidence of dual-layer freezing.

UPDATE December, 2007. All three units still working fine and still recommended.

UPDATE March, 2009. No problems! Recommended!!!

NOTE: The “57″ does NOT have S-video input; the “50″ does. I replaced the remotes with a Sony RM-VL600 ‘trainable’ remote. $20 and well worth it. Check it out.

Awesome DVD player for the price5
I’ve had this DVD player a few weeks now and have watched a couple dozen DVDs. None have given me any problems, including scratched DVDs and DVDs burnt on cheap media which would freeze and skip on my old econo DVD player.

The pros: The user interface is excellent. It seems solid, quick to respond, and well made. I love the speed up/slow down feature, very cool. It’s sleek and compact looking, excellent remote control response range.

The cons: The remote will not program for too many TVs, there’s only about a dozen codes and none of them work for my older TV. I’m sure it’s fine if you’re TV is from the last 5 years or so, or a very common older one though.

This model is one of very few DVD players I looked at that wasn’t made in China, definitely a plus in my book (although many other Sonys are).

I can’t yet speak for long-term use, but overall, I’m very impressed.

Great Value for a Great Price5
My old Sony DVD player, which was the same model started getting some problems after 7 years of performing an excellent duty. I decided to by the same model again and was amazed that the price dropped significantly. I paid less than half what I paid the last time. DVD players got cheaper, but not that much cheaper.

Compared to some other DVD players that are around the same price and which I know personally from own experience or from experiences by friends of mine, does the Sony provide a much better quality in picture and sound than those.

You can certainly buy a more “fancy” DVD player with a lot more gimmicks for a much higher price, but if what you do is just playing back your DVD movies, from the original disc or DVD-R/DVD+R backup (single and dual layer), this Sony will do just fine. It does not have the ability to play back MP3 Cd’s, but I honestly never used such feature, even when I had it with a different DVD player.
