Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung4
Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung

Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 is part of a 5 volume series by William Cheung. The series is available on VHS or DVD. I strongly recommend that you buy the DVD version. DVD’s can be played on a home DVD player attached to the TV, a small, portable DVD player which can almost fit in your pocket, if you wear pants with large pockets like those military style dungaree pants some police and paramedics are wearing now days, or you can play DVD’s on a laptop or note book computer that has an installed DVD/cd player. This would enable you to take your DVD lessons with you where ever you go and to view them whenever you have time. You can watch DVD’s in Slow Motion or speeded up. You can freeze a scene to examine it as a still picture. You can capture images. DVD’s have an interactive potential for the viewer which the VHS machines lack. This characteristic supports the viewers learning requirements for understanding a subtle or difficult move or concept being studied.

Wing Chun is the style of Kung Fu Bruce Lee learned before he developed his own style of Jeet Kune Do. Although, Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do in an attempt to develop a simpler yet superior means of fighting, he remained influenced by Wing Chun and incorporated some of its concepts into Jeet Kune Do. You will see it for yourself If you watch this video series by William Cheung and compare it with Jeet Kune Do by reading his books and maybe watching some videos of Jeet Kune Do such as the video adaptation of Bruce Lee’s Fighting Method by Ted
Wong and Richard Bustillo.

Wing Chun is very unique from most traditional styles of Kung Fu or Karate. Simplicity is its main characteristic. There are only 3 stances which feel some what more natural than the many classical Kung Fu or Karate stances. Strikes and punches are thrown from the middle of the chest. The fist is given a flick of the wrist at the last instant upon contact with its target. I compare this to the flick of the wrist at the last instant as a base ball is pitched to add a little extra velocity to it. This manner of punching is very different from the traditional hand on hip and twist of the fist at the moment of contact found in classical Kung Fu and Karate.
Kicks are kept low, usually not higher than the opponent’s waist. There is no exageration of the move’s execution, such as the wide sweeps, large circles, and exagerated force used in classical blocks and strikes.

The strategy and attitude of a Wing Chun practitioner seems more similar to that of aikido and jujitsu practioners in that the practitioner of wing chun seeks to harmonize with his opponents force rather than to oppose it.

Volume 1 of Wing Chun begins a demonstration of the Sil Lim Tao form three times. Karate practitioners would think of it as a simple kata using only hand techniques.

Next, exercise drills of basic blocks are demonstrated. In contrast to classical Kung Fu and Karate where students are taught to block first, then counter with a strike or kick. Wing Chun practioners use both of their hands to block and strike or kick at the same time.

Demonstrations of Wing Chun basics are shown more than once from different angles.

William Cheung describes Wing Chun’s strategy as being four steps or phases of attacking an opponent’s balance, creating an opening in the opponent’s defense, controlling the opponent’s elbow and maneuvering the opponent into a position in which his arms become crossed and therefore unable to fight back when trapped in that position.

William Cheung demonstrates defenses against various punches, strikes and kicks. He and his assistant demonstrate combinations and the rolling punch technique.

Foot work is demonstrated by his assistant. This leads to demonstration of the Chum Kil form and its applications because Chum Kil incorporates foot work and kicks into the form.

William Cheung and his assistant end volume 1 of Wing Chun by demonstrating a means of Chi meditation.

I think this video series offers useful information and techniques to consider for every martial artist. If you appreciate intelligent systems of fighting, you will not be disappointed with this series. However, some people might have not much use for volume 4 which is about fighting with chinese butterfly knives and a long staff called a dragon pole.

Great Video4
I took Wing Jitsu for a year (This art was invented by my instructor) and always liked the wing chun side of it the best. I work late hours so I can not take a class so I have decided to get videos and work out with my fiends.

This video has some really good stuff. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is cause they don’t do a good job of covering the very basic concepts. That worked out for me cause I already knew them pretty much but if you have never take wing chun you may want to start with Wing Chun: The Science of In-Fighting. I know a lot of people say that you can not learn kung fu from a book or DVD but in the old days in China a lot of people learned from book as long as you have some one to practice with you should be able to learn from this DVD. I have already learned most of this DVD and can not wait to get the next one.

Superficial explanation1
I was more than surprised to see the poor quality of this DVD, especially after reading the positive reviews.
Very very superficial DVD, which seems more an exhibition than a didactical tape.
No explanation of the moves, just the two persons “dancing” around, performing moves at very high speed.
This is clearly not an “instruction” video, since the techniques are not explained, just performed.
I normally prefer books as a way to learn something, but I have found some very serious and valuable DVD as well. Not this one.
Maybe if you are an advanced Winch Chung practitioner, with years of practice with a real Sifu, this can be for you. Otherwise, you will not catch much from these video.

the DVD is preferable to the CD, though the CD is quite good5
I bought the CD and the DVD versions of the Clapton/Winwood MSG as a combo from Amazon. The CD (which I reviewed in its listing) I gave four stars to - it’s very good, but now that I’ve seen the DVD, I’d give the DVD five stars, mainly for what it adds to the equation: the visuals. While it might seem counter-intuitive to grade musicians of this caliber by `what you can see’, the DVD added such a great dimension to the show, in terms of WATCHING them solo and seeing the interplay between them, and their excellent band (these guys have serious CHOPS), that I think the DVD ups the ante, hence I’m giving the DVD 5 stars. The musicianship is excellent (they make it look so EASY….i guess that’s what the best guys do when they’re on their game? Plus they’re clearly having a good time up there), and it’s great to be able to see who’s playing what (namely, that Winwood plays guitar on the first two cuts, and then on several others toward the end - he’s a very good guitarist, and holds his own with Clapton, sometimes trading solos. I wasn’t exactly sure what SW was playing on, just from listening to the CD - Chris Stainton is the other keysman). The picture is very good, and the camera work/composition is excellent, with nice close-ups and some striking angles where they got both guys in the same shot, Winwood on keys and Clapton on guitar. Some have pointed out editing inconsistencies w/ the visuals, but I didn’t really notice it, as I was enjoying the show so much. I listened to the sound in DTS-mode (as opposed to straight 2-channel stereo) and it was excellent - really good mix - much preferable to the CD mix. I guess if you couldn’t be there, this DVD (with a good A/V system) is about as close as you can get.

As for the extras on Disc 2, they’re good - interviews, some background on Clapton and Winwood’s 60’s exploits, their time together in Blind Faith, and behind-the-scenes prep for the MSG shows. There are also a couple of bonus cuts, which didn’t make the `main’ concert as presented on Disc 1 - I noticed in spots, there were synch problems (from watching the drummer) between audio and video, but the extra cuts are nonetheless good (including a 7 minute “Crossroads”). Overall, the disc set was definitely worth the dough, and if you’re a fan of either Clapton or Winwood, and have any inclination to buy this, then absolutely do so. You won’t be disappointed.

Some things are meant to be!5
Clapton And Winwood have just dropped a forty year Time Bomb on the Baby Boom Generation with this release. Soul Psychedelisizing, Electrifying, Riveting performances…Very Special! What a great Mix of tunes…Awesome tributes to many of the greats who have left us…Ray, Buddy and Jimi to name a few. WOW! Absolutely incredible Sound and Video…I was very lucky to have seen Blind Faith Live at the old Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan during the Summer of 69, when I was just a boy. You won’t want to miss this Dynamic Duos show if it comes to your Neighborhood In June. I have never seen Winwood and Clapton having so much fun! Great Stuff…Get it!

Live at Madison Square Garden - EC and SW4
First thing first, this is a fantastic dvd that is a must have for any musician -especially a guitar player. I saw one review that complained about too many guitar solos??? For me, that is the highlight of this amazing release. There are some extended jams that shows the true talent of these guys who really invented the jam band. Eric Clapton played some of the most inspired guitar in his entire career. It may have been the incredible sound of SW’s keys that provided the foundation for the inspired play. His playing on double trouble definitely made me pick up my strat… Steve Winwood still has an amazing voice along with great chops on the organ, but it was cool to see him jam on his guitar during Dear Mr. Fantasy. He is a great guitar player and I would have liked to see him play more of it along with EC on this dvd. BUT, when you have a guitar gun-slinger like Eric Clapton for a sideman, I can see why he let EC handle most of the guitar! Eric Clapton looked as if he really enjoyed playing during this performance. I have to think it was playing on songs that were fun to play for him. The highlights for me were them changes-glad-pearly queen-little wing-voodoo child-can’t find-dear mr fantasy. The only reason I give it a 4 star is that I am not sure you need another version of cocaine - and it added nothing to the show. And I think there could have been a few more extra songs on the 2nd dvd. But I have watched this dvd several times and actually enjoy it more than the Cream re-union dvd. Not sure why, because Cream is one of my favorite groups of all time. But that says a lot for this dvd. The camara gets in tight on EC’s guitar playing which is a dream for any guitar players. And it is not the usual fast cut style that we see too often in concert dvd’s. It is easy to watch and listen to. I have to get the cd now!

en years after her ordeal in the jungles of the Amazon, Catherine narrates her grueling experience to a news reporter: At age 18, Catherine leaves her London prep school to be with her parents at their factory stationed in the Amazon Jungle. As the family enjoys a boat trip into the jungle, a tribe of headhunters ambushes them and her parents are killed. Catherine is then taken hostage by the tribe. Over the next few years, Catherine is forced to live by the tribe’s barbaric rituals and savagery while always remembering who she is, where she comes from, and remaining “civilized”. Until, that is, she finds out the truth concerning the murder of her parents.

Fine Cannibal Film5
I have almost all of the cannibal movies ever made and this is one of the most original. A girl takes a boat voyage with her parents, aunt and uncle. Her parents are killed with blowguns. A tribe of natives takes the girl captive and a warrior takes a particular liking to her, but it is said he killed her parents. There’s a twist ending that wraps it up, and shouldn’t be too surprising unless you forgot some big continiuity at the beginning. The girl is modestly hot and topless through most of it. This is a must-see for fans of cannibals. I guess this version by Shock-O-Rama is an official release, as it’s listed here on Amazon.com.

Hmmm?.1
This movie is basicly too lousy too be watched at all. The plot is boring and the gore and sex that might make one forget about that is badly made and occurs too rarely.
Yawn.

Lesser known jungle shocker3
“Amazonia” could easily share the reputation of the other 1980’s cannibal gut-munchers, but for some reason it’s not quite as well known. Which is a shame, as though it’s by no means a masterpiece, it’s not actually that bad. The plot involves a young girl (the titular Catherine Miles)who is stranded in the remote jungle after both her parents are killed and decapitated by a tribe of headhunters, who keep Catherine as a prisoner, and the majority of the film charts her fate in the hands of the tribe and her ultimate revenge on the death of her parents.

Now let me say first of all that “Amazonia” does try to deliver the blood and gore, but the presentation of most of the gruesome effects is done very poorly. The editing and camera angles for all the gore shots are awful, and it’s probably because the prosthetic heads and body parts are for the most part, pretty sub-standard. Which is a shame because most horror fans are going to be watching for just these things. Things kick off in very eye-popping (literally!) fashion with the opening murder of Catherine’s parents, but you’ll see what I mean if you watch the film, because the editing of the gore close-ups is so sloppy that it looks like the film has been cut. I don’t think it has, I think the director was just too scared to show the effects for longer than just fleetingly because they weren’t very good. Time and time again, Catherine is confronted by awful sights such as someone being attacked by a crocodile, or various savage punishments and rituals, but each time the “money shot” is botched and disappointing.

But on the other hand, other parts of the film are actually very well made. There are some gorgeous shots of the lush jungle paradise, and some scenes of Catherine being dwarfed by the stunning scenery are really nicely done. Of course the usual inserts of stock footage of didn’t fool me for one second, and yes we do get to see various wild animals eating each other, but I didn’t see any examples in this film where I think a situation was set up and animals were killed especially for the cameras , whcih makes a nice change for this genre.

What also surprised me is that I actually did get involved in the plot. No doubt influenced by the “recovered film” idea of “Cannibal Holocaust”, the story is told as an entire extended flashback, from a courtroom where Catherine is introduced at the very start of the film, actually standing trial for murder. Who she murders (and why) is only revealed towards the end of the story, but it doesn’t take much brainpower to predict the twist ending that is revealed.

All in all, I would class this film as pretty well made. The jungle location used is very impressive, and parts of the film must have used quite a considerable budget. They also shoot all the scenes of Catherine’s life in London in some nicely chosen parts of the city.

The acting isn’t too bad, the main actress playing Catherine does pretty well, and for a role that is 95% almost totally naked I’d say she comes through it with most of her dignity still intact. The rest of the roles feature the standard hammy Italian bit-players, and the whole cast is saddled with a rubbish English dubbing job as usual. What really annoyed me was the woeful appearance of the head-hunting tribespeople, there wasn’t one of them that looked anything like an authentic savage, and all of them were dolled up in the most painfully obvious black wigs, which looked doubly ridiculous on the men, especially the poor “hero” Umukai, who even dared go swimming in his mop and always returned from the water with something resembling an oilslick on his head.

At least I can’t say “Amazonia” is not entertaining. I enjoyed watching it and had the special effects been better it could have been up there with the Lenzi and Deodato jungle shockers. If you’ve never been brave enough to watch a film of this type before, this might be a good one to start with as it’s probably the least offensive out of the genre, and you can enjoy some chunky gore without that bad taste in your mouth afterwards…hey, maybe that’s a bit like the difference between headhunters and cannibals!

Doc - Season 1 Description:

It’s about hope, it’s about understanding, it’s about caring, it’s about fighting…..for what you believe in. “DOC” captures the drama and humor of big city medicine as seen through the eyes of newcomer Dr. Clint Cassidy. Actor/musician Billy Ray Cyrus plays the handsome country doctor from Montana who’s love for a woman leads him to New York City where he sets up practice at a West Side HMO. He soon discovers that life and medicine are different in the Big Apple. Clint’s down to earth style and gentle bedside manner endears him to patients, but he encounters resistance from his colleagues and the bureaucratic system that surrounds him. Never losing his faith, down home values and “fish-out-of- water” demeanor, DOC adjusts to life in his new urban setting. The cast is rounded out by a group of honest, funny, likeable doctors, nurses, patients, friends and family. DOC is award winning and inspiring television at it’s best. Since it’s debut on PAX TV, DOC has become the networks number one rated drama.

Customer Reviews:

TV as it should be!5
Doc is a great show. It is dramatic and funny and uplifting. The shows are very well written and engaging. The characters are wonderful. BUT WHERE ARE THE OTHER THREE SEASONS? We need them also on DVD. Please! Pretty please!

A tear-jerker that you will fall in love with5
I don’t know what to say. This was the best series on television. The technical quality may not be quite like Law and Order or other major network shows (though it wasn’t noticeably bad), but the writing is outstanding.

This is a tear-jerker series. Beware: you’ll really get involved with the characters. The show promotes family values to the core. Not a single episode had a single thing that might be considered objectionable. This is cleaner than some G-rated Disney movies.

The premise is that Clint Cassidy, a country doctor from Montana, moved to New York City to pursue his relationship with a journalist who had stayed in Montana with him. He begins work at a Manhattan HMO, complete with rules, regulations and politics — things he’s not used to. While Cassidy (played by Billy Ray Cyrus of “Achy Breaky Heart” fame) brings a fresh air of humanity to the otherwise impersonal HMO, there’s some troubles along the way as he adjusts to his new life and the new way of doing things.

Like in any series, season one is a little on the cheesy side, but it’s nonetheless charming. The characters develop much more fully in later seasons, but season one definitely explains a lot of the things that experiences in later episodes are based on.

Unfortunately, the series was canceled in season 5. The foreign distributor pulled funding (it was filmed in Toronto) and they had to stop making episodes.

After I watched the series finale, I wrote the following letter to the cast (I don’t know if they ever received it). I’d like to share it here just to show you how much the show meant to me and how it’ll grab you as well!

(Spoiler warning)
Dear Doc cast and crew,

The series finale. Wow. I can’t believe it’s already here. When I saw the ad, I thought it said “Season Finale.” I thought that the middle of December was an odd place to take a season break.

As I watched the last episode, I found myself getting teared up as I realized that not only was the season ending but the show was ending as well, and I’m not a really emotional person. I feel like I’ve become a part of your family, and seeing you all say goodbye made me feel like I was leaving, too. At the end of that scene, I was literally crying a river. They were tears of joy — finally, Clint and Nancy were coming together (I had been relentlessly cheering that subplot on for the better part of the last season) — but also tears of sorrow. I will be missing you guys and your characters as much as you will be missing each other. You all have become like family to me as your struggles and victories, your emotions and your lives been mine. You have built a powerful emotional bond between us and you.

Thank you Billy Ray, Andrea, Derek, Ron, Richard, Tracy, Tyler, Paula, Ruth and all the others who have made this show the truly unique thing that it is. While I am truly sad to see you go, I wish you all the best in each of your pursuits.

May the characters you’ve played and lived over the last five seasons live on in your and everybody’s hearts. As you have taught us to do, treasure each and every moment as a gift from God as he writes the story of your lives. And like Clint said, I can’t wait to read the next chapter!

Truly yours,
Chris

P.S. Make sure you guys do a Doc reunion show!

Call It Corny But We Love It5
I was pleased to find the first season of Doc now available on DVD. I would like to add my voice to all the others clamoring for the remaining seasons to be released on DVD, too. This was a homespun series somewhat reminiscent of Little House On the Prairie and such, although very much updated and with a nice touch of humor added to the story of the western doc removed to the big city. While it didn’t pretend to be great drama, everyone in it was good and it was a great showpiece for Cyrus, who fit the part naturally. For a greatly underrated singer/songwriter, it was another sign that he has untapped talent. I hope some day to see his musical ability given the recognition it deserves.

Campy ’70s Fun!5
I have always really liked this movie since it came out in 1973. I have watched it countless times through the years on TV, but haven’t seen it for a while on TV so I picked it up on DVD. Although the DVD doesn’t offer a lot of features, the picture quality is good and it’s presented in it’s original cinemascope format. This was one of the higher budget “blaxploitation” flicks from the ’70s. Seeing it as a kid I thought it was the coolest movie. Now that I am a lot older, it’s still cool, but in a campy/fun way. The plot consists of a government agent named Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson)who is hired to rid the US of drugs. She goes after one of the “Queenpins” of the drug trade called Mommy, played by Shelley Winters. The one thing I never forgot about this movie was Cleopatra’s kickin’ Corvette complete with a cassette deck, which was really high-end at the time! (Most cars had 8-track players) Along with this was her funky fashions! If you like the ’70s action genre, this is a great addition to your library.

CLEO: One of Soul Cinema’s Best5
Tamara Dobson was fabulously stylish, sexy, and intelligent in her role as Cleopatra Jones, the Karate/Kung Fu kicking United States Special Government Agent (”jurisdiction from Turkey to Watts Tower baby”) who battles Drug Lord Mommy (Shelly Winters). Cleo ruffles Mommy’s feathers by burning her Turkish poppy field that has a street value of $30 million. Mommy retaliates by getting her bad cop friends to bust the B&S House which is run by Cleo’s boyfriend Rueben (Bernie Casey). The B&S House helps local drug addicts kick the habit. The B&S House staff have a Black Panther Party mentality.

To add action and humor to the movie is Mommy’s odd crew of gay beauties that cater to her every whim; clutsy henchmen; Pusher Doodlebug (Antonio Fargas, best known from “Starsky & Hutch”). Doodlebug has his own odd crew that includes his high maintenance girlfriend Tiffany (Brenda Sykes, also played in “Black Gunn”), Pickle (Teddy Wilson who went on to star on tv shows like “Good Times”, “That’s My Mama”, and “Sanford & Son”), white chauffer/butler Mattingly (real surname). Don Corneilus (Soul Train) has a cameo as himself. Ester Rolle (”Good Times”) has a cameo as the mother of Cleo’s two Karate kicking friends, The Johnson Brothers. This movie has a plethora of actors, both black and white, who went on to have extensive acting careers.

The well written story and screenplay is by Max Julien, who is best known for his role as “The Mack” and “Thomasine & Bushrod”. The soundtrack yielded two hits, one by Joe Simon and the other by Millie Jackson.

Dobson portrayed a strong black woman with a positive character. Outside of driving the James Bond type Corvette complete with phone, personalized plates, government issued weapons concealed in the door and a top that automatically raised (awesome in 1973) to accomodate Dobson’s 6 foot, 2 inch height… she displayed motor bike riding skills and a little bi-lingual capabilities that must have been needed for her traveling abroad.

The ending scene, the Bon Voyage party for Cleo ends with her white friend Police Captain Lou Crawford (Dan Frazer who has a very extensive acting portfolio with the likes of “Kojak”, “Law & Order”, and “As The World Turns”) saying “Right On” while holding up a clinched fist (black power sign) as Cleo drives off into the sunset for her next big assignment. His actions amaze the other party people and is a priceless ending that should leave a smile on your face to go with this happy ending.

The disconsolate news of Tamara Dobson’s death in October 2006 smothered the flames of my nostalgic dreams of her reprising the Cleo role for a third time (second time circa 1975, “Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold”). All biographical accounts document Tamara Dobson as having studied fashion at the Maryland Institute College of Arts before her professional modeling career. Her acting career included film appearances in “Norman… Is That You?”, “Chained Heat”, “Come Back, Charleston Blue”, “Murder at the World Series”, “Jason of Star Command”, and “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century”. Beyonce appears to have paid homage to “Cleopatra Jones” when she played Foxxy Cleopatra in the Austin Powers movie.

Tamara Dobson’s role as Cleo was a hit and this movie is a classic that would add value to any so-called blaxploitation (Soul Cinema) era movie collection.

This one is great fun4
Sure it’s over the top. Sure Shelley Winters’ character is absurd. But this one is a lot of fun. In the genre of blaxploitation movies, this movie is closer to “Shaft” in quality than it is to “Foxy Brown”. “Foxy”, while enjoyable, is a very amateurish production. “Cleopatra”, on the other hand, is very well done. The car chase rates as one of the best of the era.

As for the transfer, it also is very well done. My only complaint about the DVD is the lack of any additional features. In fact, it is so bare that the menu is a generic Warner Bros. logo instead of related to the movie.

Regardless, even if you aren’t a big fan of the blaxploitation genre, this one is great entertainment….exciting and funny at the same time.

good quality, good value, some rare stuff4
Treeline Films (Now called Mill Pond Films) has swept together some interesting Public Domain features and shorts in this, another of their 50 movie megapacks. Eight of the 50 movies (and an additional two short subject collections) are rarely seen low budget musicals from the ’40s featuring all African - American casts. A couple of them are shows filmed at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. I am enjoying watching the other features, which range in quality but are generally pretty good - I’d rate them a 7 or 8 out of 10. Mill Pond’s marketing philosophy (like that of Platinum Disc Corp.) is to offer boxed sets of older films figuring there’s going to be enough titles in them which you (and I) will want to see. I’m glad I bought this set, along with some of their other megapacks. Sure, it duplicates some of the PD titles I already have, but in most cases the quality of the Mill Pond titles is better than the Alpha, Treasure Chest or other low cost DVD distributor’s titles. If you are nit picky on having the highest quality, stick to regular “studio releases”. If you want to see some highly entertaining features most studios have forgotten about, and can live with spliced and scuffed films, try one of the Mill Pond 50 movie megapacks!

A perfect fortnight of movie bliss5
This is an absolute treasure: it costs almost nothing, it takes very little space, and it gives you about 50 hours of uninterrupted viewing / listening pleasure. I’ve just finished my first disk (it happenend to be the last, nr 12) and I am absolutely astonished: I’ve seen six films of which I had previously heard nothing, met several beautiful and gifted stars and starlets who were totally unfamiliar to me, and heard dozens of great and lesser songs. Included on this disc was an early Technicolor extravaganza Fiesta, which was stated to be B/W but was in glorious Technicolor nevertheless. I was expecting a load of poor quality public domain VHS transfers, but the six films on this disk were all very decent in their picture and sound quality, regarding that these are mostly B flicks from lesser studios. Most of the films are quite short - 45-65 minutes, so you don’t have the time to get bored. I recommend this set to everyone who enjoys classic musicals from the 30s and 40s and who thinks he has seen most of these. Major MGM-Warner productions, maybe, but these long forgotten little gems - never!

Pleasing Hitchcock film gets its due on DVD4
I confess I have a soft spot for Hitchcock’s examination of the conflict between the vows of the priest and the vows of justice. Montgomery Clift plays Father Michael Logan. Father Logan has a murderer confess his deed to him. When Logan becomes a suspect, he’s unable to divulge what was said. When a detective (a superb Karl Malden) begins investigating the murder, he comes to believe that Father Logan is the suspect he’s looking for. Complicating things, is a woman that Logan had an affair with years before and her involvement with the victim.

One of Hitch’s most stylish and the most noir looking thriller of his career, “I Confess” is one of Hitch’s few films to be shot on location in the latter part of his career. Shot in beautiful Quebec, there’s a distinct European flavor to the film due to the city’s distinct architecture and cobblestone streets. Clift gives a soulful performance despite the fact that he and Hitch clashed on the set and having a script compromised by Breen’s editing of the script for offensive material.

Although the film doesn’t quite live up to the standards of “Strangers on a Train” (the film that preceded it) or “Rear Window” (the film after it), it’s a very good minor classic in Hitchcock’s body of work. The transfer looks unusually sharp for the most part and although there is noticeable grain issues here, it’s to be expected given the black and white photography, age of the film and type of film stock used to shoot the film. Wonderful cinematography from Hitchcock’s reliable Robert Burks.

The special features include a short documentary (about 20 minutes) on the making of the film featuring Peter Bogdanovich, Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen to those who grew up on “Superman” on TV). There’s also a discussion of the performances and the difficulties in shooting the film with Clift. We also get a vintage newsreel that discusses the premiere of the film in Canada and the original theatrical trailer.

Excellent Hitchcock film!5
I won’t go into the plot, since everyone else already has…let me just say that this is an EXCELLENT Hitchcock film! I can’t believe I’d never heard of it before, but when I saw it I was blown away. Especially as the priest wrestles more and more with clearing his name at the cost of his priesthood, or keeping silence but being sentenced. The plot twist at the end in the courtroom is great, and shows that this is a true Hitch classic!

Semper Fidelis5
Hitch had made many “wrong man” movies prior to and after this, such as “The 39 Steps,” “Saboteur,” “North by Northwest,” and of course, “The Wrong Man.” What separates this from all the rest is that the movie’s protagonist, Father Michael Logan, does not embark on a sudden cross-country quest to find the real murderer. In fact, the murderer — German refugee Otto Keller — is right under Father Logan’s very nose all along, and Logan knows his guilt, because Keller has confessed the murder to Logan forthrightly.

Thus the suspense here results from the crisis of conscience Logan is put through, and few celluloid heroes have been put through the wringer the way Montgomery Clift’s has been. His is a crucial moral dilemma: Divulge Keller’s confession and get himself off the hook, or stay silent and perhaps be hanged.

Though Hitchcock held Stanislavsky “method” actors in disdain (Clift made shooting difficult, constantly defering to his acting coach on the set), he clearly could spot a great actor when he saw one. Montgomery Clift’s portrayal of Logan complex and heartfelt. He invests his character with thoroughly believable intellect and emotion, and gives one of the greatest performances of a man of integrity the screen has ever seen. The viewer can easily empathize with him and the incredible pressure he must be under. Yet, the message is clear: Father Logan is a man of the true faith — for by keeping true to the sacrament of confession, he keeps his soul intact and demonstrates his unyielding belief in the salvation of even the most tainted of souls, Keller’s.

The tension is even further racheted up a notch, because as Keller fears the police closing in, he badgers and taunts Logan, accusing him of cowardice, suspecting him of breaking. The study in contrasts could not be greater. O.E. Hasse (ironically, “hasse” being the German word for “hate”) exudes hate as the ratty instigator Keller. He definitely belongs in the patheon of evil Hitchcockian villians, like Norman Bates, Bruno Anthony, Mrs. Danvers and Madame Sebastian.

Anne Baxter, Karl Malden and Brian Aherne round out the cast with great performances. Baxter is conflicted and gorgeous as the married woman still enamored with Logan, who loved her before he assumed his priestly vows; Malden is nimble and self-assured as the detective who finds that the evidence points to Logan; Aherne is smarmy and vicious as the Crown prosecutor who goes after Logan tooth and nail. Dolly Haas, the great German stage actress, is thoroughly believeable as Keller’s wife. Throughout the movie, she — knowing her husband’s murder — acts like a scared rabbit, which is doubly ironic, since “Haas” is Dutch for “hare”!

“I Confess” was shot on location in Quebec City, and does for its vistas what “Vertigo” did for San Francisco. DP Robert Burks, helming his second Hitchcock film, paints the French-Canadian city in shades of shimmering white and charcoal black. His camerawork evokes the Gothic majesty of its cathedrals and Christian iconography, placing Father Logan in a deceptively sympathetic visual context while imprisoning him within the shadows of its dank cobblestones and Keller’s skulking presence.

The great and unheralded Russian composer Dimitri Tiomkin — who scored more Hitchcock soundtracks than any other composer except Bernard Herrmann — builds an equally dark and evocative score around the Catholic “Dies Irae” chant that summons up both doom and judgment, echoing Liszt’s “Totentanz” and Rachmaninoff’s “Die Toteninsel.”

There are many who consider this one of Hitchcock’s minor classics. I could not disagree more: “I Confess” is definitely one of the Master of Suspense’s greatest films, an underrated masterwork, akin to Orson Welles’ “Touch of Evil” or Billy Wilder’s “Ace in the Hole.” It is solid on so many different levels, and rivals “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” “Notorious,” “Psycho” and “The Lady Vanishes” for its visual power and seamless construction.
