it’s tomorrow in beijing and the events are about to start up again. there are a insufficient medals up for grabs, as well as some qualifyers. americans michael phelps and katie hoff, as well as naughty aussie stephanie rice are all making finals debuts tonight and the men’s gymnasts will take a projectile at the qualifier. oh, and bush’s new favorite sport, beach volleyball. what you need to be aware after the jump.
• Men’s Swimming: Phelps takes his first shot at the gold in Beijing in the 400-meter individual medley. His teammate Ryan Lochte is tough competition for him and can steal the medal with a perfect swim.
• Women’s Swimming: Naughty Aussie Stephanie Rice competes against U.S. favorites Katie Hoff and Elizabeth Beisel in the 400-meter individual medley. Phenom Dara Torres leads the U.S. team in the 4×100m free relay.
• Women’s Beach Volleyball: Defending Olympic champs Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh make their first appearance in competition. No word yet on whether Bush will be in attendance.
• Men’s Individual Gymnastics: Powdery little men attempt to qualify for the finals.

dontmakemethink writes “ctv reports that over the mould pair of weeks class-engagement lawsuits have been filed against two major canadian cellular appointment providers, bell and telus, for imposing fees on incoming text messages. while there has been very vocal hostility to the introduction of the fees, those who cannot variety providers due to binding contracts feel the locale is actionable in court. some of those not bound by contract, such as myself, have given their service provider notice that they last will and testament order the provider benefit of having to contact them to have charges reversed for unsolicited texts. because service providers are aware of the volume of unsolicited texts, we feel they are liable for the inconvenience to their clients because preventing spam charges, and more importantly under no circumstances should usage providers profit from spam. we also feel that requiring us to buy text bundles to dodge the inconvenience of reversing spam charges constitutes extortion. they can charge me for texts when they ban the spam.”

Christopher Farah: Obama’s “Disney” Realpolitik
In his column in today’s New York Times, David Brooks argues that Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin extolling unity and hope offered nothing more than “Disney” because it did not address “hard realities.”
In fact, it is Brooks who cannot understand the hard reality — that after eight years of George W. Bush, America’s relationship with Europe and the world is critically strained. So strained, in fact, that before the U.S. can start telling them what’s good for them, it must first establish trust. And that requires exactly the kind of diplomacy Brooks dismisses merely as “saccharine” fairytales. Ironically, Obama’s speech was necessary precisely because the U.S. has spent the last eight years pompously dictating its demands to the world, without any regard for its allies. By emphasizing the commonality of the U.S. and Europe’s destinies above all else, Obama is beginning the healing process. Without that, Obama could spew all the hard truths he wanted, and no one would listen.
Incidentally, Obama’s background as a Black American makes him perfectly positioned to understand these hard realities. To get themselves taken seriously by anyone in the mainstream, establishment white community, Black Americans have to bend over backwards to demonstrate not only that they are non-threatening, but also that they are simply normal human beings like anyone else, that their humanity transcends race. That unity must come before division. It’s a very profound burden for them to bear. And for one of the first times in our history, it also happens to be the burden which the entire U.S. bears in the context of the international community. Thank God Obama understands that.
So Obama’s “saccharine” speech was about as realpolitik as it gets. If anything, Brooks’s view is the one that’s disconnected from reality.

(CNN) — Whenever the segment featuring me and my imprisoned brother, Everett, from Soledad O’Brien’s searing CNN special "Black in America" airs nationally, I invariably receive an e-mail, call or comment from a black person saying our story is their story.
Not necessarily our particular truth — one brother, an author and professor, the other a prisoner incarcerated with a life sentence — but something close. So many black families are plagued by a similar mathematics of misery: variously stable and prospering members are divided from loved ones behind steel bars and sharply varying educational achievement, bracketed by the cruelly ironic twists of fate.

The temptation is to believe that individual choice alone accounts for such differences in destiny. Successful black family members did their work and played by the rules; suffering family members ran afoul of the law and were justly locked away.

Of course, that is true in many cases, but in far too many cases, it’s not the entire truth.
There is a vicious prison system that hungers for young black and brown bodies. The more young black and brown folk are thrown in jail, the more cells are built, and the more money made. It has been well documented that we spend far more money on penitentiaries than university education for poor black and brown males. During the 1980s and 1990s, state spending for corrections grew at six times the rate of state spending on higher education.

That means the number of black men in jail or prison has increased fivefold in the last 20 years. In 1980, at the dawn of the prison construction boom, black men were three times more likely to be enrolled in college than incarcerated.

In 2000, there were 791,600 black men in jail or prison, while only 603,032 were enrolled in colleges or universities. In 1980, there were 143,000 black men in jail or prison and 463,700 matriculating in higher educational institutions.
In effect, the cellblock or classroom choice is oppressive. We would permit no other population of American citizens to be locked away with such callous disregard for the educational opportunity that might help stem the tide of incarceration.
Everett certainly made self-destructive, choices: He sold drugs and admitted he was a pariah to his community. But he is innocent of the charge of murder for which he is serving a life sentence in Michigan.
And he is not alone. There are thousands of black men who are rotting in jail cells who have done nothing to merit incarceration. And even when they get in trouble, a great number of black men go to prison for nonviolent drug offenses. Often, crippling racial profiling and suspicion of black men put them on a path to prison, while white males who commit similar offenses are arrested and convicted in far smaller numbers.
The point is not affirmative action for black thugs. The point is that white males often get second, third and fourth chances for reform — either because they weren’t suspected to begin with, or they are given far lighter sentences and far more favorable treatment — while black males are severely punished for even rel

Wish they wouldn’t mow on the slope
i hope they would stop mowing the grass on the dam at shelley lake. there is something more pretty wide that sloping green, freshly mowed, hill with the runner on the dam path. what bothers me is i’ve seen it when they used to acquire tall grasses and wildflowers and other plants. that was not only beautiful but a important habitat in behalf of the varied unsound birds and other wildlife that live there.

i accept the soccer fanatic being mowed. that field is also used on the side of yoga in the commons, occasional summer concerts and other purposes. i get that. also, there are many side trails which are more natural and the vegetation is dense and the wildlife have more protection.

i approve of the mixed used where you have parts of the greenway system with parks and recreational opportunities and then there are the trails which are more natural and secluded both for the wildlife and the people who want off trail hikes.
i think, overall, my bishopric has done fairly plainly in terms of managing the parks and trails. i’m not complaining in general but the way the dam is mowed at this point bothers me because no a given walks down the slope toward the lake or the sink on the other side of the dam close to the creek. that’s almost exclusively an area where the ducks, geese, heron and egrets hang finished, at least when it’s not mowed to the quick.
the shot on high shows the basis of the hill (bottom of photo) and at least they keep the vegetation at the bottom for the wildlife. the off i don’t understand is that it’s not mowed so people can have access to the lake there. the lake access is readily available but that’s not one of the places proper for people. it’s steep and no one walks down there. i can’t think of a single worth reason why that hill isn’t naturalized. particularly since i’ve seen it when it was and it was such a great domain.
i guess i could have stood in front of the burgh worker as he headed towards the dam and shouted, prefer don’t mow. i didn’t do that because he had a hot morning to be into the open air there working and it’s not like it was his fault. i postulate i could write a sic and ask why they don’t suffer to the grasses and wildflowers grow there anymore.

The Marines are charging two senior non-commissioned officers for taking part in what the San Diego Union Tribune calls “a theft ring that involved the stealing of secret files on potential terrorists.” But no one is accusing Gunnery Sgt. Eric Froboese and Master Sgt. Reinaldo Pagan of giving away classified information to Al Qaeda. Instead, the marine reservists are being hammered for passing data to one of the country’s most celebrated counter-terror groups.
Back in 1996 — five years before most local law enforcement agencies had the foggiest idea who Osama Bin Laden was — Los Angeles Sherriff’s Department Sgt. John Sullivan and Deputy Larry Richards started the Los Angeles County Terrorism Early Warning group, or TEW. The idea was for federal agencies, military groups, first responders, and local cops to swap ideas about what terror threats might be coming next, and how best to respond. Radicals had their own loose networks to dream up schemes and share thoughts; here was a chance for government to fight that, with a network of their own. Every month, dozens and dozens of specialists from across southern California would get together to discuss how hospitals could cope with mass-casualty events — or how gangs like MS-13 might be the region’s real terrorists.

Former Gunnery Sgt. Gary Maziarz pled guilty to passing on information from the Marines’ “Strategic Technical Operations Center” to the TEW. He’s currently supplying information of how his fellow marines helped him out. “Maziarz testified that he acted out of patriotism to make it easier for federal, military and civilian law enforcement agencies to share information about possible terrorists,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
But that hasn’t stopped the paper from labeling Marzaiz “the linchpin of [a] theft group.” Nor has the paper shied away from calling TEW co-founder (Marine Reserves Colonel) Larry Richards the ring’s “mastermind.”
To Marine Reserves Colonel G.I. Wilson — a leading theorist of unconventional conflict, and a long-time TEW participant — this case “is a huge indictment of the stove-piped systems we’re continue to propagate after wasting billions of dollars. It kind matters you wonder who the real bad guys are in this,” he tells DANGER ROOM.
The TEW — which transferred its analytic functions to the Joint Regional Intelligence Center, a few years back — is now history. The monthly get-togethers have been called to a halt.
“Clearly, they were stupid and broke the law trying to protect their country and community,” Wilson adds in an e-mail. “But that only goes to highlight the F&&*K up intel/info sharing problems we still have in the US government.”
