Donnie Walsh Backing Off a Trade He Initiated?
According to close sources the trade involving New York Knick Zach Randolph for Serbians Marko Jaric and Darko Milicic are intensifying and expected to finalize after Monday. Walsh has confirmed organizations have been conversing, but denies a done deal.
The trade that would send Z-Bo to Memphis would be beneficial for the New York squad due to his inefficiency in the D’Antoni system. Also, and more importantly, Randolph’s $48 million throughout the 2010-2011 season will be off the books and his locker room and on court circus play would be long gone.
In July, Walsh almost traded Randolph to the Clippers but denied the offer, stating he could get much more for the second-leading Knicks scorer.
Throughout their careers Milicic and Zarko have never lived up to their expectations, especially Milicic who was drafted second after LeBron James. However, Z-Bo’s departure is an opportunity to clear substantial cap space in preparation for the Knicks’ pursuit of blue chip players in the 2010 season.
This trade will put the Knicks’ two players over the maximum 15. However, the forward position will be wide open for players of extreme potential in Lee and Chandler who seem appropriate under D’Antoni’s high tempo style.

Dan Mac Alpine: Sept. 11 date still hits hard
The date hit, a palpable sensation.
It struck the back of my head, traveled down my spine and landed with a discernible thud in my stomach.
Here at the Beverly Citizen we name our stories with the issue date. A new e-mail file had just come in, past the deadline for the Sept. 4 edition. So I added the date for next issue at the end of the story file. Sept. 11. 9-11.
seven years later the numbers still strike flat and hard.
Some may think of 2,752 people who died that day. I think of only one. Raymond Rocha. He grew up in Melrose, where I was editor at the time. He played football. Wide receiver. “I don’t know football that well,” one longtime classmate told me for an appreciation I was writing. “But you know how the receivers don’t like to catch the ball in the middle of the field? Because they get hit? Ray always went to the middle.”
Ray also went to Brown University. Had just taken his first job with a financial firm in the Twin Towers. He and his girlfriend had just rented an apartment in Hoboken, N.J. Life was just starting for them. A window open to a cloudless dawn. And then it slammed closed.
But of course life went on. For the victims’ friends. Their wives. Their husbands. Their children. Their parents. Their siblings. Each with their own, private, unfillable hole.
Life went on for the nation, too, with a similar hole in our national psyche.
Depending on your take, President Bush used that national hole and manipulated, tricked, led or bungled our country into what has proven to be an unnecessary war in Iraq and prolonged the necessary war in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Thus far, 4,152 of our service men and women have been killed in Iraq since the war began, according to figures released by the Department of Defense and tracked at http://www.antiwar.com/casualties/. The latest death was Sept. 2. The same day another 20 Iraqis were killed and 43 wounded. We have suffered another 30,568 wounded. To say nothing of the many thousands more Iraqis killed. Each victim had a life. Each had family. Friends. Hopes. Dreams. Just like the 2,752. Just like Ray Rocha.
Sometimes it’s necessary to go to war. And people die in war. Some wear uniforms. Some don’t. Death is part of war and when we unleash a war, no one knows how many will die or how long the killing will last. Wars usually last far longer than anyone anticipated and kill more people than anyone figured. Iraq is no different in that regard.
When it all seems so avoidable and unnecessary, as is the case with Iraq, the figures and the numbers become all the more haunting.
At least after Dec. 7, 1941, we could move forward as a nation knowing we did what we had to do — including Aug. 6, 1945.
But we’ve already been at war in Iraq almost twice as long as we were in World War II, and if and when we’re done in Iraq we’ll have to finish the war we should have been fighting all along in Afghanistan.
Today a small bench and garden stands next to the Melrose Public Library in memory of Ray Rocha. I don’t know if Ray would have approved what we did in his name. Maybe he would have.
I know the garden is a peaceful spot suited well to contemplating what Ray’s blind, retired mother said upon her son’s death: “Those people who flew those planes had their hearts twisted by hate. They had families, too. And I grieve for them, too.”
