It’s time to dust of your Atari ST, or if you can be arsed to do that then get your emulators out for the lads, because here is a “remake” for that glorious machine and all its fans, released only a couple of days ago on May 1st. The name of the game might be familiar to DS or other Nintendo console owners but don’t be fooled, they didn’t invent this.
This kind of picture puzzle was actually invented (not on computers) by Non Ishida, a Japanese graphics editor, who won a competition in Tokyo by designing grid pictures using skyscraper lights which are turned on or off. That was in 1997, over a decade after the release of the Atari ST, which makes this pretty retro for a remake.
The technical limits of the Atari ST haven’t stopped this game looking and playing fantastically, with some really great 16 colour artwork throughout giving it a lot of polish. There is no denying that a lot of love and work has gone into this so make sure you give it a go even if you were an Amiga fan, because it’s not every day we get such a cool 16bit remake coming out.

Nintendo’s Micro VS System has a long history as its Game & Watch portables. Same as the Game & Watch series, a Micro VS System has only one game with Game A and B modes. In this Donkey Kong Hockey game, you get to play as Mario and try to score hockey goals against the old adversary, Donkey Kong. Game B mode puts 2 players against each other. Besides the game, there’s the nostalgic clock and alarm functions.

1985-2008
(While this isn’t a Sega-related story per se, it’s still relevant to Sega fans and all gamers in general. The video arcade is a dying industry in North America and these local businesses may someday be a thing of the past. Hopefully that won’t happen, as this story shows that the arcade community still thrives even today.)
Austin, Texas — Einstein’s Arcade was a popular hangout for enthusiasts and casual players alike, with a variety of games and extremely convenient location right on the edge of the University of Texas campus. It was practically an Austin landmark; one of the few constants on the Drag since 1985, as stores changed and restaurants moved over the years.
On January 1, 2008, Einstein’s Arcade closed down.
“It was completely unexpected,” said Don Hawkins, a former employee at Einstein’s. “Nobody saw this coming.”
Hawkins said that even Josh Fields, the general manager of Einstein’s, didn’t know until the day it happened. “Josh got a call that day saying we had to clear out our stuff in an hour and a half, and the machines would be going up for sale immediately,” he said.
Einstein’s original lease had expired and the monthly rent had doubled, making a profit even harder to turn. According to Hawkins, Einstein’s owner Ronnie Roark didn’t want to pay the annual taxes on the machines and closed the place down.
“It was a huge disappointment when we heard about it,” said Ryan Harvey, a system administrator for an IT company in Austin and UT graduate. “At the same time, we knew it was inevitable.”

Harvey started at UT in 2000 and quickly became a regular at Einstein’s. “I used to be the guy that could beat all his friends at Street Fighter II as a kid. But when I came here to Einstein’s, I got my ass handed to me. I was a newbie.”
Harvey, who goes by the handle “Fubarduck” in fighting game circles, has played games like Street Fighter III: Third Strike competitively both nationally and internationally. “There’s an incredible community for these fighting games,” he said. “There’s always more to learn, and that’s something you can get in an arcade that you can’t get anywhere else. If you keep losing, there’s someone there to show you how to counter a certain move, or what to do in a certain situation.”
The fighting game community extends online as well, with players sharing videos and strategies on websites dedicated to the scene. “When I discovered Shoryuken.com, it was like taking the red pill,” Harvey said.
Some claim that the community is what kept Einstein’s around for so long. Nationally, arcades have struggled since the market crash in 1984, with a slight resurgence in popularity in the mid-1990s. And as the market for video game home consoles continues to grow at a rapid rate, it seems the market for arcades is moving similarly – in the opposite direction. Le Fun and Power Play were two other local arcades in Austin that closed down in the past few years.
If the community kept Einstein’s alive, then it’s the community that will continue its legacy. Harvey is planning to open a new arcade called Arcade UFO this summer. He was able to rescue several machines from Einstein’s, while another Einstein’s regular bought the Dance Dance Revolution Extreme and In The Groove machines. As luck turned out, her father is an Austin real estate investor, who ended up providing the location for Arcade UFO.
“Einstein’s was a great place and we loved it, but we think we can do it better,” Harvey said. “The Drag had a lot of issues, and Einstein’s had a pretty seedy feel. It wasn’t a place you’d feel comfortable dropping off your kids.”
Arcade UFO will be located in a spot that was previously a combination laundromat and coffee shop at 31st and University, right next to an IF bus stop. The place is being renovated for a planned summer opening.

“The whole situation is just so fortunate,” said Austin Hambrick, a Radio-Television-Film senior and self-proclaimed “godfather” of the upcoming arcade. “We’ve got a great location, and everyone involved really loves games.”
“It’s a niche market that hasn’t been filled, because it’s been such an awkward transition,” Hambrick said.
“People still go to movie theaters even though they can watch them at home. People still go to bars even though they can drink at home,” Harvey said. “People go to those places for the atmosphere and the experience.”
As for competition, the folks at Arcade UFO aren’t too worried. Only big chains like Dave & Buster’s, Main Event and Chuck-E-Cheese are left in Austin, and they cater to a different clientèle.
“I don’t have a lot of experience, but I’ve been around for a while seeing arcades open and close and I think I have a pretty good feel for what it takes to succeed,” Harvey said. “I wouldn’t put so much time and effort into it if I didn’t think it would succeed. But I’m not quitting my day job.”
Harvey wants Arcade UFO to be a place where both the hardcore gamer and a family can feel comfortable visiting. That means cleaning the place up, and having games – in working condition – that appeal to all sorts of gamers.
“Arcade UFO is for people that really enjoy the classic coin-op arcade,” Harvey said.

This release is a development check point which allows you to play a “relatively” bug free version of Unangband, while we significantly hack on the source to add extra features that may potentially destabilize further releases.
Please save often.
You may find Phenomedom has changed in subtle ways since the previous version. New dialogue has been added along with some new items. Certain regions have been reshaped and/or had their populations adjusted, particularly for the case of early areas that you revisit once your fame has grown.
I just released the 7th beta of LambdaRogue and the first version of this game since spring 2007.
It is this time of the year again, folks. I thought the next release would be 0.9.9, but there were too many things to do, so I decided to create a 0.9.8.10 version.
A new version of Elona has been released. I’ve fixed some bugs and translated some more messages. Also, thanks to f1r3fly, in-game help is being translated. Although it’s not finished yet, I’ve also included the help in this version.

See? It’s not just about flipping out and killing people and slashing enemies into the air and tossing shurikens into their faces and lopping off limbs and doing totally sweet combos like that one where you kick the guy in the head before chopping him into pieces and then running up the wall because you’re the ultimate unstoppable mammal. Sometimes you just have to calm down and defend yourself. If the sage advice conveyed by the above video isn’t enough, you have until June 3rd to view the clips after the break and get educated on the ways of the ninja.

Subtle, it must be said, is NOT a word that springs to mind when describing Oddbob.
Neither are quiet, sane, Southern or, thankfully, idle. For inbetwixt the fiddling and the rearranging of the site and forums, administering of various threads, keeping a healthy chat-room presence and having a life outside of Retro-Remakes Towers, Bob has chucked together enough code, graphics and sound to produce one of the most discussed games in ages on the forum. The git!
War Twats is not, as I has first thought, a gynecological discussion between two Geordie lasses. It is, in fact, a game so intense, so fast and so bloody mad that it warrants playing time and time again. Mind you, the average game lasts about 30 seconds…..
So how would one describe the game play, um, one wouldn’t dare, have a look at this…….
And that’s after about 5 seconds!
There are scores being posted on the forum all the time so I suggest you download it quick sharp and go shoot stuff to see if you can get anywhere close them. May the Bruce be with you….

After receiving a letter accusing them of patent infringement, Activision filed a declaratory judgment action March 12, 2008, against Gibson Guitars, asking the court for finding of invalidity and noninfringement. Gibson is asserting that it has a patent on a musical performance simulation, which Gibson alleges Activision infringes via its popular Guitar Hero games.
The lawsuit was filed in the Central District of California. The patent is U.S. Pat. No. 5,990,405, entitled “System and Method for Generating and Controlling a Simulated Musical Concert Experience,” issued Nov. 23, 1999. At a glance, the broadest claim appears to be:
13. A system for simulating participation of a user playing a musical instrument in a pre-recorded musical performance having audio and video portions, the musical instrument producing instrument audio signals at an instrument audio output when the instrument is played, comprising:
a. a source playback device for playback of the audio and video portions of the pre-recorded musical performance through corresponding source audio and source video outputs;
b. a source audio control device for controlling one or more characteristics of the audio portion of the pre-recorded musical performance during playback, the source audio control means operably connected to the source audio output and to the instrument audio output and having a controlled audio output; and
c. the source audio control device is responsive to the instrument audio signals whereby at least one characteristic of the audio portion of the pre-recorded musical performance is controlled by playing of the musical instrument by the user.
